Occupational Therapy Referral

Name: Farah

Age: 61

Gender: Female, prefers the pronouns she/her

Reason for Referral: Adjusting to life as a widow

Background: Farah has recently been widowed following the death of her husband, Ahmed, of 43 years. They had a happy marriage, Farah remained at home to raise their four children while Ahmed went to work and provided for the family. Ahmed was 10 years older than Farah so when he became too old to work, she got a part-time job in a local shop to help make ends meet. Farah has seven grandchildren, two of her children still live close enough for her to see three grandchildren regularly however the other two children and four grandchildren she will see only at special events; Farah finds this hard but remains in regular contact by phone.

Farah and Ahmed lived in a close community and were well liked, this support has continued, and Farah has been overwhelmed by the kindness people have shown her. She is beginning to feel awkward around people and struggling with social connections, she wonders how long she is justified in grieving and receiving this kindness. Farah continues with her part-time job but is struggling to make ends meet without Ahmeds disability payments and her carers allowance and still needs to meet the rising cost of living. Farah is contemplating selling their family home, down-sizing will reduce her outgoings, but she would need to move away from her support networks to find somewhere cheaper.

She used to enjoy going for dinner and a gossip with her neighbour, which she is now unable to afford; she would regularly visit the local market for fresh ingredients for her cooking but recently, Farah has not wanted to cook as this reminds her too much of all the meals shared with Ahmed, one of their favourite pastimes.

Overall, this is an unsatisfactory assessment

Key Strengths:

-Each stage of the occupational therapy process is discussed with some application to the case study

-Collaborative working and other links to the occupational therapy philosophy are identified within the process

-Reference list is very well constructed

Areas for Development:

-Part A does not answer the assignment brief, it is concerning as information is repeated word for word with different references. How occupation relates to health, function, participation and performance is not addressed.More discussion is required about the key focus of the philosophy occupation.

-Part A needs to be focused much more on occupational therapy rather than discussions being generic and applicable to any healthcare profession as it currently is.

-Each stage of the occupational therapy process needs to be discussed in much greater detail before it is applied to Farah, this would then demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relevance of each stage and what it entails.

-References do not match what is being discussed and therefore do not support where the information has come from. This is extremely concerning and verges on academic misconduct.

Specific action points:

-Use the reading list toread broadly around assignment topics, revise relevant lectures and make use of the discussion boards to ensure knowledge is correct and understanding is demonstrated through the assignment-Seek urgent support with regards to referencing and using evidence within an assignment to ensure the correct reference supports discussions

Poor academic practice errors have been detected.Whilst these errors might not reflect academic misconduct, they show a lack of engagement with assessment criteria or engagement with the teaching. The normal assessment criteria have been used to penalise these errors. It is strongly

This assignment has not met the required standard to pass. Iappreciate this may be very disappointing. It is important to look through the detailed comments to understand why the work received this mark. When you have had time to process the comments, pleasemake an appointment with meto discuss how you can develop this work further, ready for resubmission.

I agree with the comments and mark awarded by the first marker.Part 1 is limited in depth and detail and repetitive and does not fully answer the question. The OT process is correctly outlined and would benefit from clearer definitions to ensure knowledge is outlined.

Overall, this is an unsatisfactory assignment and you have not met the required standard to pass this assignment.

I appreciate this may be very disappointing. It is important to look through the detailed comments on the script and in my summary to help you understand why you have received this mark. When you have had time to process these please make an appointment with me to discuss how you can develop this work further ready for resubmission.

Key Strengths:

You outline the different stages of the occupational therapy process in the correct order and provide abasic level of knowledge of each of the stages.

An evidence base is utilised to support the work presented and correctly cited and listed.

Whist some of what is written is correct it relates primarily to productivity occupations - work and employment but there is no demonstration of an understanding of occupation in its wider sense and acknowledging self care and leisure occupations - this is very concerning.

Areas for development:

You have not fully answered the assignment brief for Part 1 and not outlined a clear understanding ofwhat OT fundamental philosophy, values and core beliefs are. Much more is needed on the underpinning philosophy, values, and beliefs of the profession using appropriate terminology. The overall understanding of occupation outlined is concerning and mostly refers to employment and these needs addressing urgently.

In part 2 there is not a consistent adequate level of knowledge for each of the stages of the OT process demonstrated. There is limited application to Farah and how you worked collaboratively with her to identify her needs and priorities. The interventions chosen to demonstrate a limited outline of what OT should focus on and offer

Theassessmentstage needs to demonstrate more detail on what and how you might assess I order to inform the goal setting and intervention stages

The goal planning stage did not demonstrate that you understand the process of goal planning and the importance of collaboratively negotiating these with Farah around what is important to her and breaking them down into manageable steps.

Occupational Therapists are not CBT therapists - this needs additional training - this work is demonstrating very limited knowledge in relation to what OT is and what can be offered.

Always define a key term, reference it, and then go on to apply it to the assignment brief.
