Introduction:
Scholarly investigations into the effects of vaping, particularly on both physical and mental well-being, have been prompted by the alarming incidence of vaping among Canadian teenagers. Three sources are compiled in this annotated bibliography to provide insightful information about the growing youth vaping fad. In his investigation of the impact of vaping on mental health, Scott B. Patten (2021) highlights the necessity of focused interventions and cessation therapies in the first source. The second source, a 2019 webpage from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), emphasizes the risks and hazards of vaping while offering vital information on serious lung ailments linked to e-cigarette usage. Comprehensive knowledge of the problems caused by teenage vaping sets the stage for successful interventions. The third source is a scholarly study by Naylor and Nunn (2019) that examines the causes, patterns, and effects of youth vaping on lung health. When taken as a whole, these resources help provide a thorough grasp of the problems caused by teenage vaping and set the stage for successful interventions.
Thesis Statement: Scholarly studies exploring the impacts of vaping on mental and physical health have been driven by the concerning rate of vaping among Canadian youth. This annotated bibliography provides comprehensive knowledge of the issues caused by teenage vaping and lays the groundwork for effective interventions by analyzing the effects of vaping on mental health, emphasizing the risks and hazards associated with vaping, and investigating the causes and effects of youth vaping on lung health.
The essay by Scott B. Patten (2021, p55) highlights how vaping among Canadian teenagers is changing. The study highlights the need for customized cessation interventions because vaping habits differ from traditional smoking habits. Drawing comparisons between vaping and traditional tobacco cigarettes, Patten argues that it is critical to comprehend the possible effects of vaping on mental health. The paper by Hughes, J., et al., (2021, pp18-35 does, however, agree that more investigation is necessary to completely understand these impacts. This source is crucial for recognizing the need for faster research on the effects of teen vaping on mental health and for promoting more targeted interventions and therapies.
According to Polosa, R., Casale, T. B., & Tashkin, D. P. (2021, pp159-162), this information from the 2019 CDC webpage is essential to comprehending the short-term health concerns of vaping, especially about serious lung injury. The CDC's thorough examination of the symptoms, deaths, and potentially harmful substances present in e-cigarettes highlights how urgent it is to address this public health issue. The CDC's clear warning to kids, teens, and young adults not to use e-cigarettes fits in well with the larger conversation about how vaping lowers engagement and lowers performance. This alignment strengthens the source's authority and pertinence, making it an invaluable resource for understanding the immediate health risks associated with vaping. This CDC source becomes a crucial resource for promoting educated public health policies and actions as society struggles with the rising incidence of young vaping.
According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. (2018), our understanding of youth vaping has been greatly advanced by Naylor and Nunn's 2019 scholarly study, which synthesizes current studies to highlight the detrimental effects on health, particularly lung health. This thorough analysis highlights the harmful consequences of e-cigarettes on developing bodies and critically examines the paucity of reliable information about the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as tools for teen smoking cessation. The study highlights the need for more thorough research in this area and questions accepted wisdom. To address the complexity of nicotine dependence among young people who vape, Naylor and Nunn, advocate for complete treatment approaches by fusing findings on the health repercussions and effectiveness of cessation. This adds to the larger discourse. Therefore, this source is essential for developing more nuanced responses to the problems raised by teenage vaping and for directing tailored treatments.
Published in 2021, Scott B. Patten's study explores the growing trend of vaping among youth in Canada, highlighting the need for focused treatments to help people quit and a deeper comprehension of the possible effects on mental health. To understand the temporal characteristics and confounding variables related to vaping, Patten emphasizes the shifting landscape of vaping, which was once thought to be a smoking cessation help. She also emphasizes the significance of randomized cessation studies. Research by Rahman, M. A., et al (2014, p55-75) indicates some similarities between vaping and regular tobacco cigarettes, further research is needed to properly understand the implications for mental health, according to the study. Through her work, Patten pushes for targeted treatments to address the growing drug use trends among adolescents and highlights the need to research the impacts of vaping on mental health.
Conversely, the 2019 academic study by Naylor and Nunn examines youth vaping and offers information on its causes, popular culture, and health effects. The report summarizes current studies, focusing in particular on the detrimental effects of e-cigarettes on young people's lung health. Crucially, Naylor and Nunn address the dearth of reliable information regarding the effectiveness of e-cigarettes in aiding youth in quitting smoking. The authors refute presumptions regarding the efficacy of e-cigarettes as teen quitting aids by recognizing this knowledge gap. According to the study, more all-encompassing treatment strategies are required, ones that are specifically designed to address the special difficulties that young people who are addicted to nicotine through vaping confront.
Although both studies add to the expanding corpus of information regarding child vaping, their foci are different. While Patten's research emphasizes the need for immediate mental health implications studies and targeted interventions, Naylor and Nunn offer a thorough analysis of the harmful effects on health, especially lung health, and refute common misconceptions about the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as teen cessation aids.
Conclusion:
Finally, the annotated bibliography highlights the need for research and action by shedding light on several aspects of the Canadian adolescent vaping phenomena. The CDC's 2019 reporting of urgent health risks, Scott B. Patten's investigation of the mental health ramifications, and Naylor and Nunn's 2019 findings on lung health together offer a thorough framework for comprehending and resolving the issues raised by youth vaping. These resources provide insightful viewpoints that can direct focused initiatives and lead to a healthier future for Canada's youth as legislators and medical experts wrestle with this developing public health issue.
