Design (Add design in a sentence).
Methods (Add a brief description of the method used).
Results (Add a brief description of the results What you found).
Conclusions (Add your conclusions in a couple of sentences).
(Use the heading above as a guide but depending on the type of paper that you are producing it may be more appropriate to use slightly different heading. This will also be reflected in the headings used in the main body of your article. Discuss with your supervisor. Your abstract must be full page width.)

This document has been prepared preformatted with Calibri text and a standard 11-point font, please use this style. You will also find that the headings and subheadings are pre-formatted. In all sections from this point forwards you can use 2 columns per page if you wish, as this is the layout in the majority of academic journals. Word count in each section is only a guide. Remember to remove all guide information from your final document (remove suggested word counts next to headings ).
Introduction (250-500 words)
In this section you need to set the scene for your research. Introduce the topic and include background information. Link this to the specific problem that was addressed and lay out the rationale/ purpose of your study. Background information could include a short general description of a condition and its prevalence followed by a description of the problem being addressed. The purpose of your study should be clearly stated.
Background (500-1000 words)
You should avoid using the articles that you selected for your review in this section.
Background information could include a short general description of a condition and its prevalence followed by a description of the problem being addressed.
All key words and terms should be to be defined and literature should be of sufficient scope and relevant to the title.
This section should place your study in the context of other work, include up to date references from a range of professional and scientific journals and there should be evidence that you have search the literature thoroughly. You need to justify why a literature review is required and define its scope and focus.
The concluding paragraph should summarise your findings and conclude with the aims and objectives of your review.
You will achieve higher marks in this section if there is evidence of reading of a wide range of quality sources (journals and textbooks). These may include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, nursing, sociology and social work, psychology, medical, and other health, and social care journals. It may also be necessary to pull in knowledge from outside the health or professional arena.
Methodology
In this section you lay out the justification for your choice of methodology. There may be several ways of approaching your research so why was your approach chosen? Bring evidence in here from other research. to help you make your argument. E.g., this approach was used by previous research or previous research has not used this approach. There should be a clear rationale and justification for the choice of method. You should clearly state if your focus was quantitative or qualitative research. You will be using the PRISMA checklist for your method and reporting of results ( See resources on blackboard)
Methods (500 to 750 words)
The following structure and subheadings may be used as detailed in the PRISMA2020 checklist.
Eligibility criteria. Specify the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the review and how studies were grouped for the syntheses.
Information sources. Specify all databases and other sources searched ( eg reference lists) to identify studies. Specify the date when each source was last searched or consulted. This could be in a table.
Search strategyPresent the full search strategies for all databases including any filters and limits used.
Selection process state the methods used to decide whether a study met the inclusion criteria of the review, including how many reviewers screened each record and whether they worked independently ot as a group.
Data collection and analysis Specify what data was extracted and whether this was done by more than one person. Eg participant information; Outcomes measures or other data (quantitative data ) or Themes for (quantitative data). Describe how studies were assessed for quality eg CASP tools.
Results (500-750 words)
Search results: use the PRISMA flow chart to illustrate your search strategy and results. (see Template on blackboard).
Present the extracted data for each article in table format e.g.
Author /date/country Participants Methods Results. Quality
Data Data Data Data Data
Data Data Data Data Data
Narrative ( qualitative ) Synthesis
Summarise the findings of the search (avoid repeating what is in the flow chart) Synthesise information from the studies e.g. similarities or differences; overall quality etc. For qualitative data you can synthesise themes to make new themes and add illustrative quotes.
Discussion (750 1000 words
summary of what your research has found and implications for practice
In this section you will discuss your results. This is an extremely important section as it is the section where you can impress us with your ability to write critically, primarily about your own work, but you can also link in critical comment on related research where appropriate.
You should restate the aims of the study and summarise the key results. You should say if your aims and objectives were/ were not met. Were the results as expected or were there unexpected findings?
Compare your findings with previous research. This can be from the literature review or new research.
Evaluate your study in the context of previous research by Identify its strengths and limitations. (e.g how could the study have been improved / what could have been done differently).
Discuss the implications of your study for future practice / research.
Conclusions (100- 200 words)
Acknowledgements
Very brief statement of acknowledgements.
References (word count as necessary)
Ensure that these conform to the guidelines given in Cite them right.
No numbering or bullet points in your reference list. Stick to the recommended format.
These are a concise statement of the conclusions arising out of your discussion section. There should be no new information here but a

Presentation details (word/ font size etc)
Your work should be typed in Calibri 12 font and double spaced and presented using the appropriate templates for your project (Found in the assessment tab on blackboard).
You are free to adapt the template to suit your own requirements but seek advice from your supervisor before doing this.
Sections of your article should be divided with appropriate headings. Headings should be in Bold.
Tables and Figures should be labelled, numbered, and set out as shown in the example on blackboard.
Pages must be numbered.
Citations and reference lists must use the Cite it Right format (see link on blackboard).
The assessment should be written in the third person.: Do not use terms such as I, we etc
Limit your use of abbreviations to those commonly used (e.g., OA for osteoarthritis) and avoid using too many, as this makes work difficulty to read.
Use the correct UK professional terminology e.g., quadriceps strengthening exercises and not quads exercises Physiotherapy/ist and not Physio.
Limit direct quotes to key statements that illustrate a point.
Appendices should be used only where appropriate e.g., to add a questionnaire or an interview schedule. Appendices are not marked so ensure key areas (e.g., results tables) are in your main text.
Reference lists and Appendices are not included in the word count.

Duration / word count
4500 words not including the reference list or appendices tables or figures. The abstract is included in the word count. Word count can be exceeded by 10% without penalty.
10% will be deducted if word count exceeded by 11 -30 % (or pass mark awarded if higher)
A capped mark of 50% will be awarded if the word count is exceeded by 30%
It is unlikely that work significantly below the word count will meet the learning outcomes.
