Scenario

You are a new graduate nurse who has started working in a busy GP super clinic. You meet
a client, Ms Chiyo Tamura for the first time.

Chiyo had spent her entire life in Japan. However, at the age of 70, she found herself in a
foreign land, Newcastle, Australia, where she had relocated with her daughter, Hina.
Hina had secured a full-time job in the vibrant coastal city, but the transition had been
anything but smooth for Chiyo. With limited English skills and an inherent shyness, she
grappled with the challenges of adapting to her new life. Chiyo is usually alone at home
while Hina is at work.

Today it is her first visit to a local GP clinic in Newcastle to discuss her health concerns since
her arrival. Chiyo, who has been managing type 2 diabetes with Metformin 1000mg, has
experienced unexplained weight loss. As Hina tries to introduce her mother to healthier
eating habits by offering vegetables and fruits, Chiyo grapples with a profound sense of
longing for the comfort of Japanese cuisine, including rice, noodles, and traditional snacks
like rice cakes.

Chiyo has been having trouble sleeping since her move, and her mood takes a noticeable dip
when the weather is cold and gloomy. She has limited social interactions in her new
environment, lacking friends to confide in and share her experiences with. To pass the time,
Chiyo takes solace in reading Japanese books, but her enjoyment is marred by her
deteriorating eyesight, despite her use of reading glasses. At home, she has a set of hearing
aids that could help her engage more with the world around her, but she refuses to use them.
