General Description
Model and simulate a device that could be used to measure blood flow rate. This could be the
method used to measure flow rate by a Heart-Lung Machine. Model a Venturi meter to standard
ISO 5167 long form and, using blood as the fluid, simulate flow from 1 to 5 L/m and ascertain the
discharge coefficient of the device. What are the problems that may arise from using blood as the
fluid?
Present your findings as a short report explaining the modelling and simulation. An indicative report
length is no more than 1000 words but will contain many diagrams.

Introduction
This will cover the theory and background covered in class and will partially assess learning outcome
1:
Apply the engineering principles of transducers, sensors and instrumentation in order to undertake
physiological measurements.
Materials and Methods
Refer to the rubric to partially meet learning outcome 3:
Design, simulate and analyse a range of physiological measurement and control systems.
Results
Present a graph here for flow rate and pressure drop as evaluated from the simulation. Which of the
variables is dependent or independent, bearing in mind this is a flow rate device? Give a description
of the analysis used to establish the discharge coefficient. Put the table of results in an appendix.
Discussion and Conclusions
This must be evaluative and critique the modelling and simulation.
