SECTION A – RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Background:

The research proposal is at the heart of all research planning. The proposal is as
essential to the research effort as an architect’s plan is to the construction of a
building.
Both are basic plans of procedure dealing with the problems to be researched,
identifying the data or the materials to be used in resolving these problems, and
delineating methods by which either the materials will be utilised, or the data will
be processed and interpreted.
The research proposal should be seen as the document that finally establishes
the need for the study. It should convince the reader that the research problem
and sub-problems (questions and sub-questions) are worth studying, and that
the proposed methods in investigating these problems are scientifically sound.

Required:

For this assignment, you must submit a research proposal on a topic of your
choice.

Note:

this research proposal will serve as the plan for your actual research, which
you will complete and submit in the form of a research report for your summative
assessment for this module

Procedure:

  • Find a topic that you would like to investigate.
  • In your selected topic, identify a research problem. A research problem
refers to a knowledge gap: something that is not known but that you
intend to find out through research.
  • Formulate your research proposal. This needs to show the following:

    • The problem you propose to investigate is significant enough to
      warrant the investigation.
    • The method you plan to use is suitable and feasible.
    • The results are likely to prove fruitful.
    • The study will make an original contribution.

Layout:

Please consult your notes on the construction of a proposal. The proposal should
include the following:

  • The title of the proposed study.
  • A Table of Contents.
  • An introduction (background to and justification for the study – one [1]
    page maximum).
  • A research problem statement.
  • The objectives and research questions of the study.
  • A short literature review (two [2] pages maximum).
  • The proposed research design and methodology. NOTE: you may ONLY
propose to do a literature review for your research. No surveys
(questionnaires) or interviews WHATSOEVER are allowed.
  • A schedule: a time schedule depicting activities to be completed within
    a specific time frame.
  • A conclusion.
  • References: use the correct referencing style as prescribed in the Milpark
    Reference Guide

Technical requirements:

Use 12-point Arial font and 1.5 line spacing. The text must also be fully justified.
Marking:

The research proposal will be assessed by means of a marking rubric (which can
be found below) to establish whether the candidate has:

  • a viable and researchable problem.
  • an acceptable plan of action for undertaking the research.
  • done sufficient preparation to establish the rationale for the research.
  • a feasible chance of completing the research.

The criteria in the table below should act as your guideline as to how this
assignment will be assessed. Use the information as you plan and draft your
    response to this assignment.
