CHCEDS024_AIPT_FE - USE EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT ABORIGINAL AND/OR TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER EDUCATIONTo meet the criteria of this assessment, all candidates are required to demonstrate their competence in this field of study.
Create an activity to teach a group of children about culture, diversity and anti-discrimination.
Before delivering this activity you will need to provide evidence of research you have undertaken to understand the diversity and differences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander groups in the community and the childrens services organisations. This should include finding out who the right person to communicate with is when a discussion needs to be held about an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child (e.g. elders).
The activity documentation is also to include identification of possible participation barriers. Devise a list of strategies for overcoming obstacles to participation (eg using bilingual resources or teaching the child English words). Develop written plan for a learning experience/ activity that requires children to work together to overcome barriers.
Organise for Aboriginal elders or local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander group to come and speak to a group of children about cultural practices.
The project is to be focused on one topic and include;
Words in the language spoken by the local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
Identify a range of resources (eg pictures, texts) that accurately portray Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander groups today.
Teach children about Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander art forms (eg bark painting and dot painting).
Show children a range of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artefact's and teach them what they were traditionally used for (eg boomerangs and didgeridoos).
Facilitate an activity where children identify the positive traits of their peers.
Teach children about the achievements of well-known Aborigines and/or Torres Strait Islanders.
Teach children about the ways cultural differences benefit the community and society as a whole.
Arrange for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child to teach other children about one of their cultural practices.
TIPS FROM ASSESSOR:Hi Rachel,
Project 2 can be completed by providing lessons or activity ideas and explanation that cover the 8 areas. For this project an option is to devise 2 full lessons or 4 mini lessons to cover the 8 points of Part A. A page of research should suffice to cover the 3 areas of Part B.
How to go about it:Students often break up the 8 areas into two so they cover 4 of the Key Knowledge Areas (Outcomes) within 2 lessons that run for an hour or 1.5 hour each. Alternatively, you may use the instruction template below (under Supportive Evidence 1) and include your planning there point by point. How you present this is up to you. It is easier to begin from Part B with the research then begin Part A. I hope this explanation helps.I have outlined the criteria below:
Project 2 CriteriaThe project is to be focused on one topic and include;PART A1. Words in the language spoken by the local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.2. Identify a range of resources (eg pictures, texts) that accurately portray Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander groups today.3. Teach children about Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander art forms (eg bark painting and dot painting).4. Show children a range of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artefact's and teach them what they were traditionally used for (eg boomerangs and didgeridoos).5. Facilitate an activity where children identify the positive traits of their peers.6. Teach children about the achievements of well-known Aborigines and/or Torres Strait Islanders.7. Teach children about the ways cultural differences benefit the community and society as a whole.8. Arrange for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child to teach other children about one of their cultural practices.
Ideas: More than one dot point can be covered in each mini-lesson or full lesson and can include images and videos like this (which cover a few of the dot points): http://education.abc.net.au/home#!/search/Keeping%20Aboriginal%20culture%20alive//One mini lesson could explore famous Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander sports people and the children research and create displays (6). Another mini lesson could be about bark or dot painting, another could be where you have an elder come in and teach the students about locally used artefacts (4), words spoken in the local community (1), and they could inform them of local cultural practices (8).PART B-'Evidence of Research'- Before delivering this activity you will need to provide evidence of research you have undertaken to understand the diversity and differences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander groups in the community and the childrens services organisations. This should include finding out who the right person to communicate with is when a discussion needs to be held about an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child (e.g. elders). (This is just a page or so showing your research- Look up local Aboriginal/OR Torres Strait Islander community groups and resources around you. It may be a local gallery or a centre that provides information, and contacts that could visit the school or provide a interactive session (via video). Write an outline of what you have found in your own words. This will influence the lessons you create in Part A).-The activity documentation is also to include identification of possible participation barriers. Devise a list of strategies for overcoming obstacles to participation (eg using bilingual resources or teaching the child English words). Develop written plan for a learning experience/ activity that requires children to work together to overcome barriers.-Organise for Aboriginal elders or local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander group to come and speak to a group of children about cultural practices. (In the same way you have done for Project 1, you just need to include the name of the organisation and describe what the visitor will be teaching).
