Program Overview:

This programme on chronic pain is an educational intervention aimed at helping patients with chronic pain in 8-weeks. Every session will take one hour, for twice a week on every Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:00PM to 7:00PM at community health centre, Australia. This timing will cater to people who cannot attend session in the morning.

Justification of topic selection:

Chronic pain represents a considerable public health problem, estimated about 20% of the adult population suffering from it internationally (Smart, 2023). According to the directions provided by the American Chronic Pain Association (2021), the strategies for managing chronic pain are often combined and focus on various aspects, including physical therapy, psychological help, and lifestyle modifications.

Justification of structure for program design:

Sessions two times a week for the 8-week course will help the participants be actively involved while not being too tiring.

8-Week Program:

Week 1: Understanding Chronic Pain

This session will provide an overview of chronic pain including physiological, psychological, and social.

Justification: It is necessary for the subsequent sessions to lay emphasis on providing a basic framework on chronic pain (Smart, 2023).

Week 2: Exercise and Chronic Pain

During this session, information concerning the physical activity plays, safe exercise advice, and how to put these into practice will be given.

Justification: Aerobic exercise is associated with a decrease in pain and an increase in function in persistent pain (NCCIH, 2021).

Week 3: Diet Management

The participants will be informed about chronic pain, inflammation and the dietary changes that are known to reduce the pain.
Justification: Being aware of what one eats helps in controlling inflammation and pain (Kaushik et al., 2020).

Week 4: Focus on Psychological Procedures

This session will examine the aspects of using cognitive-behavioural tools, and stress reduction for pain management.

Justification: The interventions are beneficial in chronic pain by modifying the patients perception, thought processes, and emotions about the pain (De C Williams et al., 2020).

Week 5: Medication Management

This session will examine medication management, its advantages/disadvantages, and correct administration in chronic pain.

Justification: Knowledge of medications is crucial for disease or pain management (Elma et al., 2020).

Week 6: Alternative Therapies

This session will discuss other therapies, like acupuncture, massage therapy, Herbal treatment, for the participants.

Justification: Alternative approaches can also be helpful for chronic pain relief (Al?Moraissi et al., 2022).

Week 7: Self-Management Plan

In this session, participants will prepare individual self-management plans based on the accumulated knowledge from prior sessions.

Justification: Self-management programmes enable participants to manage their condition (Varsi et al., 2021).

Week 8: Future self-care scheme

The last session will focus on expressing some important concepts and ideas, answering the questions, and the further self-care scheme.

Justification: A review session is one of the most effective methods of reinforcing learning and enabling the participants to continue with self-management (Hestmann et al., 2023).

Support Strategies for Self-Management:

The concept of self-management will be implemented through educating clients and developing an individual patient plan for the management of chronic pain. Participants will receive effective educational material, individual programmes for pain management and continuous support (Varsi et al., 2021).

Exercise Programming Consideration:

It will focus on the use of low intensity exercises and a gradual loading to reduce participants pain and to enable them to incorporate the process into their daily routine.

Involvement of other Health Professionals:

A certified exercise physiologist (AEP) will provide recommendations on safe exercise, a diabetic nutritionist will provide diet plan and a clinical psychologist will help to deal with the psychological aspect of pain (Staudt, 2022).

Indicative Group Sizes, Funding and Cost:

Cost for 8-week program is $800 per person. The programme will be able to host 10-15 participants per group. Moreover, patients with Medicare access can attend 5 free group sessions annually, with chronic disease management plans that will include a gap payment of $10 per session as providers fee (Medicare, 2023).
