Assignment 1

1- Using the yield line method, determine the collapse load and the collapse
mechanism for the slab shown on the next page. The moment capacity may be
assumed to be M in all directions. The top edge of the slab is fixed, the bottom edge
is free, and the left-side and right-side edges are simply supported. Assume the slab
is loaded with a uniform pressure load q.

2- Model the slab in Strand7. Apply a unit uniform downwards pressure to the top
surface of the slab. Perform a linear static analysis to determine the elastic stress
distribution in the slab. Answer the following:

1. Show contour plots of the elastic principle tensile stresses on both the top
   and the bottom of the slab. Indicate where cracks are likely to form.
2. Compare the stress plots in part 2 (a) with your yield line pattern (collapse
   pattern) from part 1. Are they similar?
3. Discuss how a collapse mechanism could develop as the pressure load is
   incrementally added to the slab (starting from a pressure of zero).
4. Explain how a linear analysis may help in determining yield lines.
5. What would this concrete slab look like in real life when it is just at failure?
   Draw a picture showing realistic crack patterns, locations of concrete
   crushing and locations of yielding reinforcement. Draw both top and bottom
   views.

For the Strand 7 Model, you may use the following information:

• Slab thickness: 250 (mm)
• Concrete strength: 32 (MPa)

3- For the slab shown in Figure 2 develop a system of strips which will support the load according to Hillerborgs Strip Method. Show the plan of the strips you use in sketches. Present the results of your design in a separate diagram. (Show the moment values, do not calculate the reinforcement.) Assume the slab is loaded with a uniform pressure load q.
