Conestoga College

CODE8003 Ontario Building Code

Term Assignment

Term Assignment Life Safety Drawing, OBC review and Letter to the CBO

Due: Refer to Course Schedule

Value: 30% (Group Project - 2 students per team)

Part A: Based on the Building Scenario noted below (Use only Option 1, 2, 3 or 4). Prepare a written letter addressed to a Chief Building Official (CBO) explaining the building design with respect to compliance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC). Focus on Division B Part 3: Fire Protection, Occupancy Safety and Accessibility. Prepare this letter with the intent that you are explaining to the building department how the building will be designed with respect to key OBC requirements that you have learned in Weeks 4 to 10. Give the building a project name and an address (not a real address). At minimum indicate: project type, major occupancy classification, building area, gross area, building height, building classification (designed to 3.2.2.?.), if sprinklered, if standpipe required, if fire alarm required, construction type, number of streets re-

quired, and building occupant load. For reference and better understanding you can refer to the OBC Building Code Data Matrix, Part 3 that is on eConestoga for items noted above. Note: nor- mally a Code Matrix is submitted at the time of the application for building permit. Do not sub- mit the Code Matrix. You may address this letter to Mr. M. Smith, CBO, 100 OBC Street, Any Town, Ontario. Length of letter to be maximum 2 pages.

Part B: Also include a 1-page life safety plan of the typical floor plan that identifies key OBC life safety items on the floor plan such as: suites, public corridor, exits, maximum travel distances to exits, vertical fire separations complete with fire-protection ratings, , egress and exit doors.

Indicate required width dimension of public corridor, stairs, and doors. Create a neat floor plan sketch based on one of the scenario options noted below. Door locations are your choice. You may use a legend or put notes on the drawing. You may scan your sketch or take a photo to include in the submitted pdf. Note: normally, life safety plans are included with construction drawings showing key OBC code information when construction drawings are submitted for building permit.

Scenario: Base your letter, OBC review and life safety plan on one of the following options based on the layout sketch on page 2. Note: The same rough sketch applies to all options. The typical floor plan is the same for all upper floors and includes 10 equal sized suites, 1 public corridor, 1elevator, and 2 interior exit stairs. (You do not need to show washrooms, suite layouts, service spaces or windows - this will simplify this assignment) Assume every floor (storey) has the same layout and the building area is the same dimensions as the typical floor. Assume the same occupant load is also on the first storey. Also, assume the building is fully sprinklered. Each floor has 10 suites.

Option 1: A 5 storey, Apartment Building, all suites are 2 bedrooms

Option 2: An 8 storey Apartment Building, all suites are 2 bedrooms

Option 3: A 5 storey Office Building, all rooms are tenant suites of 100 m2

Option 4: An 8 storey Office Building, all rooms are tenant suites of 100 m2

Layout of Typical Upper Floor (doors and windows not shown)

Not to Scale

Submit: One combined pdf file: LastNameFirstName_CODE8001_term assignment1.pdf

Evaluation: 50% for written letter, and 50% for life safety plan drawing. Refer to Rubric. End
