Community Development Project: Supporting the Indonesian Muslim Community at Westall Mosque
For my HCS 302 Community Development assignment, I am participating in a community project within the Indonesian Muslim Community at Westall Mosque. This mosque hosts a weekly gathering every Sunday morning, organized by the mosque administration. The event includes a religious speech delivered by a local Sheikh or international students, followed by a shared breakfast.
My Role and Contribution
My involvement in this project is providing food for the community, which costs me around $50 per week (approximately $200 per month). The breakfast is a collective effort, where women from the community contribute by bringing a plate of food to share.
Impact and Benefits
This initiative helps strengthen community bonds by bringing people together, especially newcomers such as:
- International students (Masters/PhD scholars)
- Working Holiday Visa holders
- Small families or individuals new to Melbourne
These groups often need support in adjusting to a new environment, and the community helps by providing information, resources, and sometimes food for those in need.
Youth Engagement
After breakfast, the youth organize activities for young children. These activities include:
- Learning to read the Quran
- Playing fun, religion-based games
This ensures that, even while growing up in a Western society, children maintain a connection to their Indonesian roots and Islamic values.
Conclusion
Through this project, I actively contribute to building a supportive and inclusive community, fostering social connections, and helping newcomers feel at home.
