Description

The complexity of health care is reflected in the vast array of specialist care areas. Each specialist areas requires specialist nursing knowledge and skills which are underpinned by scientific knowledge and evidence based practice.

This assessment will provide you with the opportunity to analyse epidemiological concepts and the impact of health determinants on the development of disease in your specialty practice area. You will address how determinants of health, such as negative lifestyle behaviours, impact on pathophysiological changes that occur at the cellular level. By completing this assessment, you will actively apply your learnings from this unit and enhance your foundational scientific knowledge to better understand and manage complex care needs.

Assessment details

In the format of a narrated PowerPoint presentation, you will be required to use the learnings from this unit and high quality evidence to analyse, appraise and discuss epidemiological concepts and the impact of health determinants on the development of a common health problem in your specialty practice area.

Take a look at the assessment rubric for clarity on how your presentation will be marked and assessed. There are two key components:

  1. The content of your presentation.
  2. Creating a narrated PowerPoint presentation.

Content of your presentation

Define your scope

First you need to choose a common health problem in your specialty setting. This defines the scope of your presentation and the type of relevant and recent peer-reviewed, evidence-based literature you will need to research and include. This will be important for the introduction of your presentation.

Explain the common health problem within the context of a patient example, ensuring you maintain confidentiality by using a pseudonym for the patient with the common health problem being discussed and use a generic specialty description (such as gerontology, cardiac or medical).

Apply your evidence of learning and demonstrated content knowledge

You will need to refer to your learning materials in this unit and research relevant and recent peer-reviewed, evidence-based literature regarding epidemiological concepts and the impact of health determinants. We cover this in the first four weeks of this unit:

  • Weeks 1 and 2: Epidemiological concepts and determinants of health.
  • Week 3: Bioscience concepts underlying common health problems.
  • Week 4: Common health problems.

The readings and resources linked in the unit learning materials are examples of relevant and recent peer reviewed, evidence-based literature. However, you will be required to conduct your own research too.

Use the ACU Library nursing.guide (https://libguides.acu.edu.au/nursing)_(ACU Library, 2021) to start your research on your defined topics.
The Refine (https://library.acu.edu.au/help/guides/help-yourself/refine) section of the ACU Library website provides you with tips to find peer reviewed literature.
Note the correct referencing style for this presentation is APA 7. Visit the ACU Library APA 7 guide (https://libguides.acu.edu.au/referencing/apa7#s-lg-box-21240382). (ACU Library, 2021) to find examples of how to reference different types of resources using the left hand navigation panel.

A requirement of this assessment will be to produce a reference list of all the sources you have referenced throughout your presentation. EndNote is software that helps you store, manage, search and share references. You can download it for free as an ACU Online student. Supporting your evidence of learning and content knowledge with visual elements

The presentation may include photographs, video, animation, sound and/or music. All sources must be referenced and you must consider copyright implications regarding use. The best way to mitigate any copyright risks is to use open access materials. Open access is the free, immediate online availability of information, with no limits on reuse, re-purposing or sharing.
