Assessment title:

A primary research study, a service evaluation* or an extended literature review resulting in a written dissertation of 9000 words (80% of the marks) PLUS a 20-minute viva voce examination (20% of the marks)

Depending on the availability of suitable projects that your supervisor can negotiate with their link placements, you may be able to undertake a small service evaluation project into one aspect of a local clinical service. As such projects need to meet the needs of our clinical partners, and we are unable to offer this opportunity to all. If you are interested, please discuss this with your allocated dissertation supervisor at the earliest opportunity. NB This option will require you to work at a pace largely dictated by the clinical service and so your supervisor will need to discuss this with you to ensure you are in a position to work flexibly and to the required timescales. Therefore, if you have placement time to make up, have deferred or referred academic assignments outstanding, you are unlikely to be offered the opportunity.Furthermore, if your supervisor has more suitable students than opportunities, they may use the mark obtained on your Evaluating Research Methodologies module as the basis of selection. The final decision will rest with the supervisor who will be classed as the principal Investigator and hence accountable for how you conduct the project.

Task 1: Written work (9000 words)

Subject Knowledge and Understanding

To complete this element successfully you need to.

Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the research/evidence base related to your project. This relates to the research/evidence that you use to demonstrate the value and significance of your project (introduction and background literature review sections) and the research/evidence you use to discuss the significance and meaning of your own research findings (discussion and conclusions sections). These findings, of your own, must also be clearly understood and well explained (results and discussions sections).

You also need to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the research methodology and method(s) that you chose to adopt, justifying their appropriateness, in the context of other relevant and possible approaches/options (method section). Other similar research may be used to inform this discussion.

The breadth and type of research/evidence that you use throughout your work will be appropriate and reflective of the nature and extent of your specific research focus/topic.

Intellectual Skills:

including understanding, judgement, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis

To complete this element successfully you need to

Ensure you have fully analyzed your own research findings/data collected, using appropriate and justified methods of data analysis. Your analysis and reporting of results should be thorough and presented in a clear and unambiguous way. It should clearly address, and relate back, to the aims/questions and objectives of your research (results section).

Ensure that the key outcomes/findings of your data analysis are clear within your discussion. Again, it should be clear how these key outcomes relate back to the original aims/questions of the research, and these key outcomes/findings should be pulled together/synthesized as a whole, in order to enable conclusions to be drawn. You should evaluate the significance of your findings, by discussing these in the context of other related research or evidence. You should also discuss the quality of your own research findings, by appraising their reliability and validity, credibility of data, transfer-ability, dependability and confirm-ability and the relevant factors that influenced this (discussion and conclusion sections).

Demonstrate a critically evaluative approach to the associated research/evidence base that you use, to support and inform your ideas and arguments. Critical appraisal should be clear and consistent, where you assess the strengths and limitations of the associated research/evidence and provide comment on the reliability and/or validity, credibility of data, transfer-ability, dependability or confirm-ability of the research findings that are reported on within this associated literature. In summary, a questioning and analytical approach to the related research/evidence you use should be adopted.

Subject specific skills and application to practice

Reflect on the research process and the final outcomes. Strengths and limitations of the project, and the reliability and validity of your research findings, are appraised. Evidence of a reflexive approach adopted throughout the research process, as relevant to the method undertaken, is included (method and discussion sections).

Discuss and justify the implications and recommendations for practice, as a result of your research, as well as any recommended research projects for the future. These are valid given the outcomes of the project and the context to which they relate. Plans for dissemination should also be clear and appropriate, given the potential impact of the project, key messages and key target audiences (discussion, conclusion and recommendations sections).
