Instructions for students

Assessment 1: Critical essay (30% of total unit mark) Due date Friday 10th March at 12 midday

The intent of this essay is for students to have the opportunity to integrate the information that has been learnt related to the NSQHS standards. This will allow students to apply knowledge within their current nursing context into future roles and practice environments. The essay will require students to read a Coroners report into the death of a patient and analyse specific NSQHS Standards related to the case.

This assessment meets Unit Learning Outcomes 1,2 and 3

Please note that Ms Williams was of Aboriginal heritage, and this may cause distress to students. Please contact Prue (Unit coordinator) if you would prefer a non-Aboriginal coroners case for your essay.

Essay Instructions:

Read the Western Australian Coroners record of investigation into the death of Antoinette WILLIAMS (a copy of the investigation is on the LMS NUR 355 essay assessment site).

You are then required to write a critical essay that focusses on

  • The National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards: Communicating for Safety Standard

  • Review the NSQHS standards and identify which specific items and action points of the Communicating for Safety Standard that were poorly provided.

  • Use current literature to analyse the specific item and action points of the Communicating for Safety Standard you have identified

Word Count: 2000 words (+/- 10%). End text references are not included in the word count.

Essay presentation requirements:

  • Submit through the LMS NUR 355 site (see below

HOW TO SUBMIT

Submitting to LMS

The assignment submission portal is found in the Assessments section of the NUR 355 LMS. The University uses software called OURIGINAL (Urkund), which checks for text matches. All assessment files are automatically submitted to OURIGINAL (Urkund) via the submission portal. For all written assessments you may submit as many drafts as you wish until the due date.

When submitting a written assessment:

  • Submit a draft essay in the assessment section of LMS.

  • Wait to receive your OURIGINAL (Urkund) report. Use the OURIGINAL (Urkund) feedback to help with making improvements to your draft assignment. You should allow extra time to obtain the OURIGINAL (Urkund) report and act on it. (Do not be alarmed by the high OURIGINAL (Urkund) percentage if you submit your work multiple times. You can adjust this by viewing the feedback report and un-ticking the previous submission in the Sources list.)

  • You can repeat this process as many times are you wish until the due date. If you make any submission after the due date, the submission will be registered as late, and penalties will apply.

Please note that OURIGINAL (Urkund) is a text-matching system designed to compare work submitted by students with other sources from the internet, journals/periodicals, and previous submissions. Its primary purpose is to detect any submitted work that is not original and provide a thorough comparison between the submitted document and the original sources.

You are required to upload your critical essay to LMS for assessment as outlined in the assessment details (page 17). You are required to submit your work by checking the student declaration box and then clicking the SUBMIT button. Please be advised, if you do not click the SUBMIT button, your work will be in draft form and cannot be marked. Any work in draft form will be classed as a late submission and subject to -10% per day late submission penalty as per the University Assessment Policy. Once you upload your required document to the Critical Essay section of the Assessment tile of LMS, this is classified your own work and you are agreeing to the submission. Work submitted to LMS cannot be revoked and is final. No submissions after the deadline are accepted in LMS unless prior approval is granted as per the extension requirements below.
