Critical Reflections in Physical Education Pedagogy EDP2304
- Subject Code :
EDP2304
Introduction
This critical reflection of the portfolio approach of teaching makes students participate in the class activities actively and as a result, develop critical skills such as teamwork skills and decision-making skills in the lesson plan known as the Rock, Paper, Scissors Tag Game. So, after the critical evaluation of the plan created, I focused on such issues as uncertainty of instructions; insufficient use of pedagogical procedures, and weak assessment approaches to make the learning environment more facilitating and less discriminating.
Discussion
Generating a Lesson Plan
The strategy utilized in the Rock, Paper, Scissors Tag Game is highly effective for student development since it teaches students about collaboration and problem-solving. There are ways how it can be enhanced, one of which is fostering fewer transitions between the instruction, the game proper, and the debriefing. Such changes would improve the flow of a lesson, repetition of goals and objectives, and also make the lesson more systematic. If the teacher incorporated short breaks where the student has to reflect on their performance after each round, it would thus link the physical activity aspect with the cognitive objectives effectively as the students get to judge their progress (MacGill, 2022). This reflective approach would also make the lesson more fun, and meaningful for the students to learn. All in all, the changes made to the plan to make it dynamic and flexible would enhance the opportunities for all the learners to be more active during their development and grow both physically and mentally.
Analysis of the Pedagogical Approach
In its structure, the lesson plan captures principles of learner-centered approach and experience-based activities that are inherent to physical education. Thinking about this, I can see that although activity and involvement are promoted throughout the game more stress should be made on how these components relate to the overall teaching and learning process. Thus, making clear connections between the game and outcomes such as working in teams, fast decision-making, and strategizing would help the students better understand the potential of the game. The way that has been employed in the game enables the students to learn through action and decision-making processes which are vital in physical education (Gurr, Acquaro, & Drysdale, 2021). However, I have realized the importance of having structured reflection moments, which will enable the students to reason about their actions and how they may change. This real-time feedback from both friends and the teacher makes the learning process real-time and open to the achievement of the needs of each learner.
Evaluation of Safe and Challenging Learning Environments
Safety comes first in PE lessons but the exercises should be empowering a challenging to the students. All in all, although, there are basic safety measures like boundaries and a safe zone in the lesson plan it can be improved (Gibbs & Beamish, 2021). Further decreases in accidents can be shown by continuous demonstrations of the rules in teaching as well as their frequent reminders. Also, flexibility in the level of difficulty of the materials used making it relevant to the needs of different students enhances the engagement levels. It is even more challenging in terms of difficulty for the advanced learners but all the questions are within the level of the learners (Gibbs, 2022). This way the environment is made fairly safe and there is also interest from students and the necessary engagement to make learning an adventure.
Evaluation of Assessment and Recording Instruments
About the completed assessment methods in the lesson, I saw the need to incorporate more formal approaches to identifying students progress. The initial plan did not have an assessment plan to the same level as what was mentioned above: adding observational checklists and peer feedback mechanisms would help to paint a better picture of the students progress in teamwork, decision-making, and strategic thinking. It is also important to record the improvements made in these areas for they can also be used as feedback to students so they could easily grasp how they improved. Besides, peer feedback can help learners gain an outsiders view of their work, which enhances their understanding of how the process has gone and their interpersonal skills (Mockler, 2020). These assessment instruments would not only monitor the learners physical activity but also assess the knowledge and interpersonal aspects of learning thus providing a comprehensive picture of the learners development in the context of Physical Education.
Conclusion
The Rock, Paper, Scissors Tag Game lesson plan helped in the critical reflection of areas in instruction, safety, and assessment as follows. Specifically, the following aspects were given as priorities for improvement in the design of this lesson the more those aspects are refined, the closer the lesson will be to the educational objectives, the students will have a safe environment for learning, and the overall engagement will mean a lot to the students addressing the concept better.
