Digital & Literacy Evaluation
From your Course Coordinator:
Digital literacy, or the ability to utilise computer technology, is necessary if you want to study online. Online study requires you to access resources and assessments online and will require you to carry out important research of topics relevant to your field of study.
The ability to conduct self-directed online research is important in all fields. In the workplace, if there is something you do not know, you may need to conduct research to expand your knowledge on a topic.
The following assessment has been developed to ensure you have the ability to carry out the basic functions necessary to be successful in your studies at TAFE Digital.
Overview and Instructions:
You have been requested to complete 4 small tasks so that the teaching section can assess your online digital skills to allow you to participate in online study. These tasks have been designed to simulate similar tasks that you will be completing on a day-to-day basis when participating in the course.
Please read the following pages carefully to fully understand the tasks you are required to complete.
Task 1: Edit and sign the cover sheet and student declaration
On the following page you have been provided with a template for a cover sheet that is often used in the delivery of assessments at TAFE Digital.
Please fill in the required information, and then date and sign the provided declaration: electronic signature is preferred.
These declarations are important, as they state that the work you have provided us is your own and is not plagiarised.
Please refer to the following page to complete the cover sheet.

Task 2: Independent Research Task
Online delivery with TAFE Digital is a self-directed form of study, where you will be provided with resources on an online platform. There will be times however, when you must undertake independent research during your studies to find information to complete your assessments.
As a potential student in a course related to architectural design or building and construction, you are to complete an independent research task on the topic of Floor Plans.
Task 2.1: Please access the internet, do some research, and provide a response to the questions below in the textbox provided.
- What is your understanding of a residential project floor plan?
- State 4 different pieces of information that can be found on a floor plan that are necessary for construction.
- Copy the website address where you found this information, (the URL).
Note: If you copy information from a website, article, textbook, or book, without summarising the information in your own words, then ensure you are quoting the text using quotation marks and providing a written reference in the form of a bibliography. Quoted text is generally in the form of copied small statements used to support arguments or explanations that you have written in your own words, not entire paragraphs, or pages of information
Task 2.2: In the space below, please provide an image that complements and illustrates your response from task 2.1. Below the image, provide details of where you sourced the information, e.g. website link/address.
Task 3: Weekly Expense Report
Task 3.1: Creating an Expense report
You have been provided with a list of expenses below. Using this list, enter the costs into the provided Excel spreadsheet to create a weekly expense report.
Please ensure you enter and label the expenses in the spreadsheet. You will need to insert additional rows. Please research how to do this if you do not know.
When you have entered all the costs, add the daily totals together in the applicable box. Then add the daily totals together to calculate a final weekly total. Save the excel spreadsheet to your computer.
Weekly Expenses:
Lunch Daily - Monday to Sunday - $10.50 per day Petrol - Monday $66.00 - Thursday $42.00 Groceries - Friday $240.20
Fruit - Saturday $36.00
Coffee Daily - Monday to Sunday - $9.00 per day Medical centre - Wednesday $70.00
Council rates - $5.80 per day Electricity - $3.45 per day
Car registration and insurance - $6.40 per day House insurance - $7.20 per day
Task 3.2: Exporting the expense report to a PDF
After the expense report has been correctly filled out, export the Excel spreadsheet as a single A4 landscape PDF. Please ensure you are capturing all the information in your pdf. You will be required to do additional research if you do not know how to export to a PDF.
Refer below for some instructions on changing the page orientation and creating a print area:
Task 4: Combining PDFs and submitting your work
A common requirement for assessments at TAFE Digital is that students submit their assessments into a single combined PDF document.
This is important not only to assist teachers when marking assessments, but it is also an important skill to learn for when you are working in the industry. There will often be times where you must combine reports, drawings, images, etc, regardless of the industry you work in.
Task 4.1: Combining PDFs:
As part of this digital literacy assessment, you will be required to save pages 2, 3, & 4 of this word document as a PDF and combine it with the Weekly Expense Report PDF from Task 3.
Please refer below for instructions on how to combine PDFs:
If you are using MAC/Apple, you can use the preview application to combine PDFs together:
Use Preview to Combine PDFs on your MAC
If you are using a PC, there are 2 ways for you to combine PDFs together:
- Download a PDF merger program, or
- Use an online PDF merger
Please ensure that you open the PDF after merging the files together to ensure that the formatting and presentation has not been altered.
It is important to note that this word document should be formatted as an A4 in portrait orientation. The expense report, however, was required to be saved as an A4 landscape page. Although these are 2 different orientations, it is often important to retain these different orientations and/or page sizes when combining files and submitting your assessment.
Task 4.2: Emailing the section:
Now that you have completed the above tasks, you will be required to rename the file, and email it to the section for review before your enrolment application can be progressed.
Please use the below naming convention:
Firstname_lastname_Digital & Literacy Assessment_Name of course applied for
When emailing the file, please ensure you are replying to the email that was sent to you by the teaching section.
