Design, create, develop, and analyse a series of digital media elements suitable for delivery on the web

For each of the following media elements, you must provide
• A design documents
• The initial source material used in the creation of the element
• Final edit at the highest quality and resolution possible
• The smallest possible file of the media suitable for the planned use of the element on the web

1. Still Image(s) [5 marks]
Be able to demonstrate manipulation of a series of still images. For this, you must:
1. Use some original photographed material
2. Show the original photograph and the edited one with the following effects
a. An element removed from the photo
b. Colour correction/highlighting of one colour
c. Two different filter effects
d. Correction of exposure, sharpness or noise
e. A portrait image, highlighting the person in the photo
f. A scene or building, using effects to enhance the image.

3. Provide sample images showing art direction for desktop, tablet and smartphone in a picture
tag.
4. Show examples of different pixel densities of an image in a picture tag

5. Do the critical evaluation and review of created media elements and applications in this task
about their aesthetic and functional qualities.
6. To support your created design, you need to write 250 words of backup design rationale.

2. Moving Image (video) [5 marks]

A 1-minute (guide only) video sequence and effects that you have created yourself that must include
the following:
1. Some original material
2. Credits at the end, showing sources of the material including details of any media you did not
create yourself
3. An edit with a voice-over describing the effects used throughout the video as they happen
4. At least 5 video editing effects which could include:

Colour Correction / Enhancement, 3d Effects, Morphing, Puppet Effects, Animation
Effects, Graphic Effects, Text Effects - At least 1 must be implemented over time
5. Captions of the voiceover, and production of a number of final edit video files that meet the
recommended upload encoding settings for an SDR upload and an HDR upload to YouTube as
well as formats suitable for native HTML5 video across all major browsers.
6. Do the critical evaluation and review of created media elements and applications in this task in
relation to their aesthetic and functional qualities.
7. To support your created design, you need to write 250 words of backup design rationale.

Audio [5 marks]

An audio clip demonstrating editing and effects that you have created yourself that must include the
following:
1. Some original voice-over material
2. Audio editing techniques such as: cleaning the audio clips of clicks and pops, removing artefacts
from source material such as rings, beeps, background hiss and hum etc. matching/adjusting
the volume of the constituent source material.
3. Production of a number of final edit files ensuring that the material can be played as native
HTML5 audio across all major browsers.
4. Do the critical evaluation and review of created media elements and applications in this task in
relation to their aesthetic and functional qualities.
5. To support your created design, you need to write 250 words of backup design rationale.

4. 3D [5 marks]

A 3D interactive element. For this, you must:
1. Use some original material
2. Provide text and graphics effects added to the video footage
3. Upload to YouTube
4. Do the critical evaluation and review of created 3D modelling in the production of submitted
materials in this task in relation to their aesthetic and functional qualities.
5. To support your created design, you need to write 250 words of backup design rationale.

5. Technical Requirements [10 marks]
Your website must contain the following media elements, which you may have created in the previous
tasks:

  • An interactive video that
    ? Engages the user by showing alternative storylines depending on user interaction
    ? Utilises video controls that fit in with the design of the site and the nature of the
    interactive video (replacing controls that the browser produces automatically)
  • One control should link to a YouTube video showing one route of the video as a whole video for the user to watch
  • Responds to timings and interactions (clicking, drag and drop, key presses, etc.) such as:

• Changing the website content/style automatically
• Changing the video source

o Graphics and Imagery

  • Graphics that showcase a range of editing skills
  • Good use of correctly formed graphics throughout the site

o An interactive 3D content section

  • Integrated into the website for viewing with YouTube
  • Fall back to YouTube

o 2D and 3D Animation / Transitions to improve user experience

  • Triggered when the user hovers over elements on the page (such as buttons or
    graphics) or on page load/change to engage the user and increase the user experience

o Audio

  • In a hidden Easter egg, which plays an audio sequence you have edited suitably for the
    target audience

Your site must be uploaded to a web server and work in all modern desktop browsers, (Google Chrome,
Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge). Where features are not supported in these browsers, you must feature
detect and poly-fill with alternatives where possible. Do the critical evaluation and review created

You must only use:

  • PHP, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript.
    Secure the approval of your tutor should you use other technologies. No credit can be given for
    work that is not your own. All coding sources MUST be referenced in the code itself. Review

6. Technical Media Specification [10 marks]

  • Documentation stating the requirements and technical specification of each media element
    included in the website including
  • Size, resolution, file type options, compression options suitable for the inclusion of the media,

7. Critical Evaluation [10 marks]

  • Analysis of the approaches taken to include the media in the site and how the solutions are
    used to enhance the user experience and their aesthetic and functional qualities.
  • You will demonstrate your site and present the key decisions made and the key points from
    your critical analysis
  • For the critical evaluation you need to write 500 words.

  • Your student identification number must be clearly stated at the top of each page of your work.
  • Where appropriate, a contents page, a list of tables/figures, and a list of abbreviations should precede
    your work.
  • Each page must be numbered.
  • Please use the Times New Roman font
  • size 14, bold for main titles
  • size 12, bold for subtitles
  • size 11, regular for the body of each section
  • size 9, italics for the image, chart or graph captions or labels
