The purpose of this whole assessment task is to enable you to examine an influential theorist that has had an impact on the study of children's development.You will consider the main tenets (ideas) of this theoryto critique and explain the impact on teaching young children in contemporary Australia.

This assessment supportscourse learning outcomes K1, K2, K3, K4, S1, A1 and A2.

Assessment details

You will need to select a learning theory from the following two options for this essay:

• Jean Piaget'stheory of cognitive development


• Lev Vygotsky's sociocultural theory

The best place to start when choosing which theory to discuss is to research and read scholarly readings on the works of Piaget or Vygotsky, and to review your learning fromModule 2: Cognitive development.

Paragraph two: Critique of your chosen theory

You should critique the chosen theory usingscholarly literature andusing current research (you must use at leastthreearticles from reputable sources) andother theorists to underpin your arguments. You are encouraged to use the library databases to locate research articles that will help you support your critique of your chosen theory.

Paragraph three: Impact of your chosen theory on contemporary teaching

Explain the impact that this theory has on teaching young children in contemporary Australia. Ensure you have engaged in the discussion inModule 2: Cognitive developmentto develop your thinking and ideas about the impact of cognitive theory on the teaching of young children.

Conclusion (and references)

In your conclusion, restate your aim and the key points of your essay. You will need to include correct APA 7th edition in-text citations and a reference list as part of this assessment. Please note thatthe reference list is not included in the word count.
