Assessment Description

Task Overview

The current NSW Board of StudiesGeography K-10 Syllabusand theHumanities and Social SciencesCurriculum F-6place a clear and substantial focus on learning about values and attitudes. This assignment gives you the opportunity to understand that no teaching is value free and it is important to recognise this and choose both effective and suitable teaching approaches when exploring issues ingeography.

Thisessayrequires you to identify and research fully a current local geography issueandto consider the values teaching approach or approaches required to allow meaningful and long-term learning to take place in the primary classroom whilst meeting curriculum requirements.Familiarity with Geography curriculum content and the three main values approaches used among values educators(as expanded upon in Topic 2 Notes) will be essential. Through this process, as a pre-service primary teacher, you will gain experience in the knowledge and understanding of both content and pedagogy that are crucial for effective teaching of geography.

In this assignment you will be:

  • required to become familiar with the Geography syllabus (BOSTES, NSW) - (ACARA:HASS Version 9)

  • encouraged to think about how you would use current local issues to teach geography curriculum content effectively;and

  • assessed on your understanding of the learning materials in Topics 1-4, including the textbook and other prescribed readings.

The task in detail

Select a media article (e.g newspaper/magazine) that reflectsa localgeographical issue that is relevantto primary age students andappropriatefor teaching curriculum outcomes focused on values education in the primary classroom. The article needs to be from 2022/2023. It needs to reflect a current issue i.e.one that is still not yet resolved or one that is ongoing.

Your essay needs to:

  • Introduce and explain the issue. This explanation must demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge about this geographical issue and the values positions held by the various stakeholders. This is necessary for teachers to adequately plan and teach contemporary geographical issues in the primary classroom. (700 words)

  • Justify the issue choice in-line with curriculum requirements: Usingeitherthe Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum(ACARA, 2023Version 9)or(BOSTES 2015) Geography K 6 Syllabus or your states equivalent, align local geography issue with curriculum requirements. Begin with the relevant Year/Stage group, the content description [HASS] or outcome [BOSTES: Geography] and explain how the investigation of this issue will address Year/Stage group requirements as well as broader requirements.. the aim(s), rationale and overview of learning for Year/Stage group. (400 words)

  • Explain the purpose of values teaching approach/approaches to be used to investigate issue and justify.Explain the purpose of the values teaching approach/es, (as outlined in Topic 2 Notes), you would use in the classroom to investigate this issue and why this choice would be the most effective and appropriate to meet curriculum requirements and to investigate topic/issue.
