Assignment 1: Critical analysis of evidence-based teaching practice
Word/time limit:1200 (+/- 10%)
Weighting:50%
Due date 16November2022(Week 5)
This assignment requires you to present a critical analysis of evidence-based teaching practice that will demonstrate your understanding of the primary curriculum learning areas, their concepts, content, and structure. As a part of the analysis, you will demonstrate your knowledge ofteaching strategies, evidence-basedpedagogy and evaluativetools that measure impact on student learning and wellbeing to effectively support student learning outcomes.
This assignment supportsunit learning outcomes 1 and 2.
For this assignment task, you are required to conduct a critical analysis of evidence-based teaching practice. There are two parts you must complete:
Part 1: Writea 400500 word critical analysis
Writea 400500 wordcritical analysis on an evidence-basedpedagogy (instructional model) that presents your knowledge and understanding of its use and how it intends to support the teaching of the content of a curriculum learning area.
Identifythe relevantevidenced-based teaching strategies, andassessan evaluativetool(one)that measures the impact on student learning and wellbeing to support student learning outcomes.:
So, within the first section of your assignment you need to discuss your chosen teaching model (what it is) and discuss the teaching strategies that fall within it. Evidence-based just means that there has been research into these strategies which shows them as beneficial and effective. Your writing will include reference to readings on our essential readings list - and I'd definitely look at the content of weeks 2 and 3 to help.So within the parameters of the model, there may be certain things which you can do in terms of your approach (methodology) orteaching strategy- such as how to approach behaviourally challenging students, or, how to build rapport or how to create a scaffold to enhance and support student learning. So you are kind of fleshing out what the model is, and how it would be applied. The second part within this asks you todiscuss an evaluative tool. This can be anything you use to measure success throughout a period of time. So, if you have a look in next weeks content, there is a lot about ways of gathering data and measuring progress. There are informal evaluative tools such as progressive discussion, but we probably need you to focus more on looking at data gathering tools that are more formal, such as Guttmann charts or other strategies to collate student data (for example on a formative and then summative test.)
Lastly, the template section is where you link the teaching model into a specific area of the curriculum, discussing why it is a good model to use for specific subjects.
IMPORTANT : To also add on to what I stated for the first post above this one (in case I did not make this clear enough),don't get caught in the first section just telling me WHAT the model is.Your understanding of what it is should be clear from your discussion ofhow it is appliedandhow it is meant to be used to support the curriculum area.
Part 2: CompletetheTemplate (DOCX 46.8 KB)Download Template (DOCX 46.8 KB)(700800 words).
Describehow the evidence-based teaching practice (instructional model) that you have addressed connects to a curriculum learning area and relevantevidenced-based teaching strategies with an example from either English, Maths or a curriculum area and level of your choice
Identifythe evaluativetools that measure impact on student learning and wellbeing to support student learning outcomes. You mustselect1 (one) of the following curriculum areas and connect the evidence-basedpedagogy and evaluativetools:
EnglishInclude the concept, contentand structure, and connect to evidence-based teaching practice, relevantteaching strategies and an evaluativetool.
MathematicsInclude the concept, contentand structure and connect evidence-based teaching practice, relevantteaching strategies and an evaluativetool.

EDU60017: Understanding Theories of Teaching, Learning and Development
Assignment 1: Presentation
Time limit:6 minutes (+/- 10%)
Weighting:20%
Due date:13/11/22 (Week 4)
An understanding of learning theories is essential for teachers, as it will ensure teaching practice is always underpinned by sound theoretical principles.
In this assignment, you will appear in a video as a teacher, presenting information on a key learning theory to your professional colleagues (i.e. fellow teachers) by way of a video presentation. This presentation will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the features, strengths and limitations of this theory, as well as how it relates to your own values and beliefs. It will also allow you to develop the presentation skills that are required as a classroom teacher.
You will be required to submit a Word document, which should include the URL to your video presentation and the reference list of the evidence utilised to prepare it.
This assignment supportsunit learning outcomes 1 and 2.
Selectoneof the three learning theories covered in Theme 1 of this unit:
Behaviourism
Cognitivism
Constructivism.
You must then produce a video presentation and imagine yourself speaking directly to your professional colleagues about your chosen theory. You will need to be in the video, as this assignment will assess the presentation skills you will need as a classroom teacher.
For this assignment, you are not expected to discuss the major parts of your chosen theory in detail. You can assume the viewer already has a high level of understanding of the theory itself. The focus of the presentation should be on the applications of this theory in a classroom setting and your personal beliefs surrounding the positive and negative impacts of the theory (backed up by research).
The purpose of this presentation is not to demonstrate your knowledge of the details of the learning theory, but to provide you with an opportunity to connect theory to classroom practice and, in turn, your own values and beliefs around teaching and learning.
In addition to the content of your presentation, you will also be assessed on the quality of your presentation. Remember, you are a professional educator addressing an audience of peers. All information must be presented in a way that demonstrates a level of professionalism and addresses the needs of your audience. Your speaking voice, use of support resources and visual presentation (including your physical posture, non-verbal communication and clothing choices) are all important considerations.
Important note:For more information and support on this assignment, refer to theGuide to completing Assignment 1: Presentationpage listed in the Supporting resources section.
The seamless structure of the presentation ensures that the key issues emerge with clarity and precision.
The presentation includes a high degree of insight and critical understanding. A comprehensive and confidently articulated analysis of the learning theory in relation to classroom practice, and personal values and beliefs.
The presentation uses language in a highly sophisticated and insightful way to engross the audience.
Language and detail are used expertly.
The visual elements are seamlessly integrated into the presentation and deliver a comprehensive overall effect.
Written material on screen enriches the presentation.
The use of visual and non-verbal communication (e.g. eye contact, body language) by the presenter engages the audience.
An extensive range of relevant scholarly material is cited seamlessly in support of the arguments.
A reference list is included, formatted accurately in APA style.
Assignment 2: Essay
Word limit:2000 (+/- 10%)
Weighting:40%
Due date:5pm AEDT Monday 19 November 2022 (Week 6)
Through Theme 1, you should have started developing an understanding of the main learning theories. This assignment will allow you to begin applying these theories in a classroom situation by writing an essay that analyses the practice of teaching in the classroom. In addition, this essay will give you an opportunity to critically reflect on your own beliefs about learning and teaching, and to begin to consider the influence of developmental factors within the classroom.
This assignment supportsunit learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
In addition, this assignment also supports your understanding of the following Australian Professional Teacher Standards:
1.1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning.
1.2 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn and the implications for teaching.
3.3 Include a range of teaching strategies.
You are to produce a persuasive essay, in the first person, in response to the following statement:
Whole class teaching, concentrating on the foundations of the subject, is the best way to ensure that learning takes place. To what extent do you agree with this statement?
Your essay will include:
anintroductionthat summarises the issues to be covered in your essay and introduces the position you will take in response to the statement provided
apersuasive argumentin support of your position that provides evidence of:
an analysis of pedagogy and classroom practice, based on your understanding of learning theories and supported by relevant and quality literature
a critical reflection about your personal beliefs regarding learning and teaching and how these relate to theories and practice
an overview of the influence of child development on learning
aconclusionthat summarises the points discussed in your essay and makes one final statement about your response.
This essay will involve a critical evaluation of relevant existing literature for the chosen topic. You should use a variety of sources,10of which should be scholarly sources such as peer reviewed academic journals and books. You must useAPA 7th edition style referencingin text and include a reference list (which is not included in the word count and must start on a separate page) with your final submission.

Assignment 3: Case study response
Word limit:1500 (+/- 10%)
Weighting:40%
Due date:5pm AEDT Monday 10 December 2022 (Week 9)
You are to produce a 1500-word report that explores the learning and development theories in the following case study. Your report must also connect these learning and development theories to pedagogy and classroom practice.
Important note:If you are studying the Masters of Teaching (Primary) you areonlyrequired to respond to Robert's case study. If you are studying the Masters of Teaching (Secondary) you areonlyrequired to respond to Felix's case study.
Case study: Primary
Robert, a nine year-old boy, recently moved with his family to a new academically rigorous school where his mother and father both teach. He also has a younger sister who attends the school who is age six.During the first few weeks of the school year, Roberts classroom teacher said he was quiet and was not making an effort to seek friendships. He rarely contributed to classroom conversations and only spoke when asked to respond to questions. An early term classroom report from his teacher noted that he was struggling with his writing and reading.
His teacher was asking for more support from the learning resources unit to help him along with his writing. Robert was also having difficulty with mathematicshe was able to classify objects into coherent categories using physical objects, but when it came to abstract reasoning, his confidence and skills were diminished. During PE, it was noted that he had very good hand-eye coordination and significant running pace on the field. He has additionally participated to a high standard, particularly in non-competitive sports. He has started co-curricular activities this term, including squash and drama. Next term, he has been encouraged to start a musical instrument and join in a team sport.
Case study: Secondary
Howard College has a separate Year 9 program with an emphasis on independent and inquiry learning. You are the Pastoral Teacher for Group 1 and you will teach the group both of your method areas.
One of your new students beginning Year 9 is 14-year-old Felix. His most recent academic results in Year 8 reflected some strengths and weaknesses. In English, Science, Humanities and Art, Felix scored Ds or lower and, rather than study a language, he was placed in a language support class. Felix has been in the 'Modified Maths' group where he excelled with an A+. As he is in the Modified Maths stream, he will be unable to take undertake Maths in VCE.
Felix is a 'C student' in Physical Education (PE), however, he excels in Music, especially on the practical side but not quite so well in the theory component. In Technology, he scored an A in Materials but an F for Systems. His Year 8 Pastoral Teacher had this to say about Felix:
'He displays good social skills in pastoral, is friendly and happy and quite good at Music and PE. Felix struggles to focus at times depending on students in his class and his poor spelling holds him back. He needs to have a higher emphasis on his learning. Felix says he wants to do VCAL in the coming years.'
Felix's teachers have also noted the following:
he can be distracted in class
he struggles to develop ideas on a topic
he has difficulty covering all aspects of tasks with a number of sections
his handwriting is illegible
he struggles to understand the main points of a lesson, especially when there is a lot of teacher explanation
his completed work often has errors
his effort varies depending on the subject.
While Felix does not have a formal diagnosis, it is clear hehas additional learning needs and his NCCD category is:Cognitive Substantial. The following table details Felix's academic testing from Year 6.
Felix's Assessment Results: Year 6
Area Stanine Key
General reasoning 2 Stanine 1 = Very low
Verbal response 1 Stanine 2/3 = Below average
Non-verbal response 3 Stanine 4/5/6 = Average
Mathematics performance 3 Stanine 7/8 = Above average
Reading comprehension 3 Stanine 9 = Very high
Spelling 4 Written expression 2

Note:For Felix's NAPLAN results R = Reading, W = Writing, S = Spelling, GP = Grammar & Punctuation and N = Numeracy.
Your reportshould include:
anintroductionwhere you briefly introduce the case studyyou should also state what you intend to cover (including the development issues and learning theories that your reportwill focus on) and support these intentions with evidence in your body paragraphs
abodywhere you:
identifyandoutlinekey development issues in the case study that are impacting on Robert/Felixs learning
connectthese development issues with relevant learning theories
explainhow the learning theories you have identified could then be applied to classroom pedagogy and practice to address any barriers to Robert/Felix's learning
citeacademic literature to support your discussion
aconclusionwhere you summarise the key points of your responseyour conclusion should provide the reader with an overview of the main ideas you discussed and highlight the progression of your thought process
areference listin APA 7th edition style.
Note:As a report, each key development issue should be formatted with a heading.
It is not necessary to discussallareas of development (intellectual, physical, linguistic, emotional, moral, social and psychological). Rather, you need toselectandapplythe most appropriate areas of development that relate to the case study, with support from theory. Responses that simply describe the areas of development will not meet the assignment criteria.
While you will undoubtedly have personal views on this issue, this task requires you to define and explain from an informed perspective. With that in mind, you should refer to the ideas of others to help construct, support and validate your explanation, and illustrate your discussion through reference to this academic literature. You should use a variety of sources,at least 15of which should be scholarly sourcessuch as peer reviewed academic journals and books. Your work must be referenced throughout and full references given in APA 7th edition style at the end of the report. Your reference list must start on a separate page.
Your report must be written in third person and should approach the case study from the point of view of a teacher, not a psychologist. This means that the focus should be on how the learning and development theories you identify and outline can inform classroom practice. You do not need to cover a set number of learning or development theories. Instead, analyse the case study to identify key contributing developmental factors in order to inform pedagogy and classroom practice that addresses barriers to learning for Felix.
Important note:For more information and support on this assignment, refer to theGuide to completing Assignment 3: Case study responsepage listed in the Supporting resources section.

TRANSCRIPT
Hello everybody, welcome toassessment unpack for assignment two. This assignment requiresyou to develop a foliothat's explicitlyfocused on literacy and numeracy. Now the folio will beplanned around your method area, and it will incorporateteaching strategies and learning experiences. What you need to do forthis particular assessment task is to plana teaching and learning sequence that issituated in one of your method areas. The teaching and learning sequenceshould consist of a minimum ofthree lessons that aresequential and build on one another. So you should think of itas focusing on one particular concept andactually scaffolding that learning throughthree individual lessons. You shoulduse the sequence of learning and teachingtemplate to structure your sequence. You should aim your teaching andlearning sequence on Year Eight.
Once you have plannedyour three lessons thatare sequential and build on one another,I want you to then usethe 4-A framework to modify yourlesson to incorporate opportunitiesfor literacy and numeracy learning. So the 4-A framework,we know that first of all,you need to identify whatliteracy and numeracy skills students willneed to access the contentof each of your lessons. You'll then need to plan a wayto assess if studentshave the literacy and numeracyskills that you have identified. You'll need to adjust your lesson planto support literacy and numeracy learning. You'll need to explainhow you will appraisethe impact of your teachingin relation to literacy and numeracy.
So your folio shouldhave three distinct components:
teaching and learning sequence ofat least three lessonsplanned in one of your method areasand aimed at year eight
an analysis ofyour teaching and learning sequenceusing the 4-A framework
and an adjusted teaching andlearning sequence thathighlights the changes thatyou've made based on your analysis.
So when you are applying the 4-Aframework to your lesson and you're makingthat analysis and provisioningfor literacy and numeracy, you need to make connections tocourse materials and youneed to make connections to wider readings.I would strongly encourage youto look at the rubric criteriabecause that will guide you inrelation to what you should beincorporating inthis particular assessment task. But your folio hasthree distinct components. So number one,the teaching and learning sequence ofat least three lessonsplanned in your method areaand aimed at Year Eight; an analysis ofyour teaching and learning sequenceusing the 4-A framework;and also an adjustedteaching and learning sequence thathighlights the changes that you'vemade based on your analysis.
Remember in your analysis you arelinking to theory and you arelinking to course materials.
