ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW AND INSTRUCTIONS
Job descriptions are an essential part of hiring and managing your employees. These written summaries ensure
your applicants and employees understand their roles and what they need to do to be held accountable.

Task 1: Job Descriptions
Choose a medium-sized local business from the hospitality or tourism sector in Rotorua and create two (2)
separate job descriptions. One job description should be for an entry-level position and one for a supervisory
position, which should show the additional skills required to supervise staff.

Research different job description formats. Examples are also available on Moodle. There's no set format to how
you describe the job role, but you should include these elements into each one:
 

1. Add the official internal job title - What is the job role you are describing?
2. Reporting structure — What position are they reporting to? Do they have anyone reporting them?
3. Job Purpose — Aim to keep this to 30-40 words and talk about the job rather than the company. This part
   should provide a high-level summary of what the job entails.
4. Role responsibilities — Outline between eight and ten main tasks/duties the successful applicant will be
   expected to undertake.
5. Person specification — Discuss what skills and attributes/personality type you are looking for in your ideal
   applicant. Do they need to be able to operate specific equipment or technology?
6. Equipment/software used — Any specialist equipment/software that the position is required to use?
7. Education, Experience & License requirements - List the requirements of the position in terms of
   qualifications and experience.
8. Working conditions —What are the hours, the salary, the physical requirements of the job?
