Task Description:

This assessment will give you the opportunity to show you understand how cell structure and function and protein synthesis are related to the functioning of organs in the body. It will also develop your research, written communication and referencing skills.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multi-organ, chronic disease that is genetically inherited. Not so long ago, individuals with CF died before reaching adulthood. However, an improved understanding of the disease and the use of targeted therapies has meant many with CF now live into their forties. Using the university library catalogue and appropriate websites, research cystic fibrosis and discuss the following points:

1. Referring to the information you studied on cell structure and function, and protein synthesis, briefly discuss how the information encoded in a gene produces a specific protein in eukaryotic cells. What is a gene mutation and which specific gene is affected in people with CF? How many copies of the mutated gene are required for an individual to have CF?
2. What is the name of the protein affected in CF, where is it located in cells and what is its primary function?
3. There are six (6) different classes of mutation of this gene. What are these six (6) classes and how do they impact cellular function?
4. Two (2) types of cell membrane transport are affected in CF. Name these and explain how body tissues are affected.
5. With reference to two (2) organs, describe the impact of CF on how they function and how that impacts the body systems involved. For each organ/body system discussed, provide two (2) treatments that can improve quality of life for the individual.
