EUB108: Early Childhood Development and Learning (Birth 8 Years)
Assessment Task 2; S2, 2022
Literature Review and Transcript Analysis
Word length: 2000 words (total)
Weight: 50%
Due: Friday, 23rd September, 2022 (Week 9): 11.59pm via Turnitin
The purpose of this assignment is to develop your skills in locating, interpreting and applying developmental theory and research focused on childrens speech, language and cognition.
Part A: Literature Review (1500 words)
For the literature review component, you will choose ONE of the topics outlined below. The literature review should incorporate the following sections:
Introduction: A brief but clear statement about the importance of speech/ language in childrens development, followed by specific information about your chosen topic and an outline of the review.
Literature Review: A review of relevant work done by others. Detail two key studies that have contributed to knowledge about the topic in recent years.
References: A reference list prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA7).
A literature review provides an integrated discussion of literature relevant to your chosen topic. For this assignment, you should be accessing scholarly works including journal articles from the databases that report on empirical research, as well as textbooks and book chapters related to your chosen topic (not newspaper or magazine articles, or websites). A video on database searching and academic writing has been uploaded to the Blackboard site under the Assessment tab.
You should discuss the literature, not just present an overview of the topic. Typically, when completing a literature review, you will access more references than for a general essay. A literature review tells a story about your topic over time and highlights recent studies as part of the discussion (see the Support Sheet for an example).
Various techniques may be employed for organising the literature review. Subheadings may be used, dealing with each of the major issues or constructs to be investigated. Subheadings make it easier for the reader to follow the literature review, and should act as your guide for both the searching and writing process.
Choice of Topics
The Structural Components of Language
Consider: How do the structural components of language develop in the early years? Investigate the development of phonology, morphology and syntax.
Language in a Social Context
Consider: How do expressive and receptive language skills develop in the early years and what is the influence of the social context? Investigate childrens semantic and pragmatic development.
Cognitive Development: Information Processing Perspectives
Consider: How do information processing skills develop in the early years? Investigate childrens memory development and the use of memory strategies including rehearsal, organisation and elaboration.
General Knowledge: Concepts, Categories and Scripts
Consider: How do children develop increasing knowledge about the world in the early years? Investigate the development of concepts, categories and scripts.
Part B: Transcript Analysis (500 words) Please see BB Folder
A language transcript is provided for you to decode and interpret. In the interpretation column, decode the transcript using your knowledge of the structural components of language (phonology, morphology and syntax), and the use of language in a social context (pragmatics and semantics). Write a more detailed interpretation of the transcript that builds on your decoding and link your key points with relevant scholarly literature to support your findings about the childrens competencies. The transcript outlines a play scenario between three children. It would be appropriate to decode for each child and to include comments about each of their capacities in your detailed interpretation. To support this task, we will be practising decoding techniques in the tutorials each week.
Assignment Submission
Submit your assignment as one document and upload via the Turn it In portal on the Blackboard site. Please contact IT Support or Student Success Group should you need assistance with preparing a document for submission.

Support Sheet
EUB108 Assessment Task 2Introduction (approx. 150 words)
Begin with some bold, factual sentences about the importance of language, and then lead into the specific topic you have chosen. In the Introduction, use a structure that tells the reader what to expect in the review (e.g., firstly... secondly... finally....).
Literature Review (approx. 1350 words)
If you have more than one focus area (e.g., semantics and pragmatics) then write about each in turn and use headings to separate them. The literature review should provide a picture or story of your chosen topic in terms of what has been said and researched over the past 10 years or so.
Under each heading (e.g., semantics, pragmatics), it is useful to begin with a definition of the term. Then, discuss how children develop skills related to your chosen topic, focusing mainly on the age of children you will be working with during professional experience. For some topics, it could be relevant to briefly discuss key models/theories around the topic. Remember that for a literature review, you are looking for links between your literature sources (what the authors say that is different or similar across different articles). When making a key point, aim to cite more than one reference in the bracket (e.g., Miller, 2013; Shaw, 2011) to show that you have read across the literature and know what different authors have researched/stated. When citing more than one author in a bracket, ensure they are in alphabetical order (not date order) and separated by a semi-colon.
As part of your discussion, highlight the method and findings of two recent empirical studies. As an example, if you have just discussed the term pragmatics and then outlined typical skill development for young children, you could then write....
In a study by Mills and Coombes (2012), children aged 2-3 years showed strong capacities with......, but difficulties with...... The study engaged 102 children in three tasks with the aim of....... The findings of the study align with expected skills of 2-3 year olds who typically demonstrate......
In the discussion, the idea is to link the findings of the study back to the previous points you have made about your chosen topic. The two empirical studies you are highlighting as part of your discussion may have similar or contrasting findings.
Note: The two key empirical studies you are highlighting as part of your discussion only form part of your broad literature base. Draw on a range of empirical articles, your textbook and book chapters to develop a comprehensive list of sources for your literature review.
Reference List (not included in the word count)
Use correct APA formatting. Ensure all sources cited in-text are included in your reference list in alphabetical order.
