The Implementation Procedure for the Description of Final Theses

PART ONE

THE BASIC DEFINITION OF THE FINAL THESIS

Art. 1 Introductory provisions

This instruction regulates the implementation procedure for the description of final theses (hereinafter referred to as the FT) of which defence is part of the state final examination at the Silesian University in Opava, School of Business Administration in Karvin (hereinafter referred to as the SU SBA). The instruction defines the FT, the supervisor of the FT; it lays down the maximum number of the guided FT. Further, it also describes the procedure from the creation of the topic proposal to the handing over of the signed description of the FT to the student (see Attachment no.2). The purpose of this instruction is to systematize the entire description process of the FT and strengthen the link of the FT to the field of study.

Art. 2 Supervisor of the FT



  • The supervisor of the FT may be an academic or researcher of the SU




  • The supervisor of the FT may be a full-time doctoral student of the SU SBA. The guidance of Bachelors theses is conditioned by the supervisors approval and the guidance of Masters theses is conditioned by the approval of the Scientific Board of the Faculty.




  • At the request of the Head of Department, the Dean may grant consent to appoint an individual as a supervisor of the FT, without complying with the definitions under Art. 2, paragraphs 1-2. Such an individual has to demonstrate sufficient education or professional practice in relation to the topic of the FT.



Art. 3Maximum numbers of the guided FT



  • The supervisor of the FT - from the ranks of academic and scientific workers of the SU SBA - may guide a maximum of 25 FT with the scheduled handover in the relevant academic year.




  • The supervisor of the FT - from the ranks of students in the full-time doctoral studies of the SU SBA - may guide a maximum of 8 FT with the scheduled handover in the relevant academic




  • The supervisor of the FT under 2, paragraph 3, may guide a maximum of 3 FT with the scheduled handover in the relevant academic year.



PART TWO

THE 2ND YEAR BACHELORS DEGREE STUDENTS

AND THE 1ST YEAR FOLLOW-UP MASTERS DEGREE STUDENTS

Art. 4 Topic proposal of the FT



  • The supervisor of the FT shall insert a topic proposal into the web application Tematikon (https://kariera.slu.cz/admin) by 31.3. in the relevant academic year.




  • The topic proposal of the FT shall contain the following mandatory particulars:

    1. Type of the thesis: unique or independent;

    1. Type of the thesis: Bachelors or Masters thesis;

    1. Academic year: the academic year, for which the topic of the FT is offered, e. in which the students may choose a topic, regardless of when the FT is processed or defended; the thesis defence generally falls into the following academic year;

    1. Supervisor: name and surname of the supervisor of the FT;

    1. Name of the thesis: a descriptive name of the FT, which can be later specified in the description of the FT after agreement with the student by e.g. the name of a specific company, a specific city or country, etc.

    1. Field of study/degree program: the supervisor of the FT has to select the field of study/degree program or specialisation, for which the topic is intended; one topic can be offered at the same time for more fields of study/degree programs, or specialisations;

    1. Annotation: a brief annotation of the topic serves as basic information for the guarantor of the field/degree program, who on its basis, shall examine whether the topic corresponds to the field for which it has been offered, and thus meets the professional profile of the graduate; the annotation also serves as information for students about the planned objectives, focus and content of the thesis.





  • At any time from the beginning of the academic year, a student may contact the supervisor of the FT and agree with him/her on the topic of the FT. The supervisor of the FT shall insert such a topic proposal into Tematikon with a note that the topic is reserved for a particular student.



Art. 5Approval of the topic proposal of the FT



  • By 30. 4. in the relevant academic year the guarantor of the field/degree program or a person authorized by the Dean (hereinafter referred to as the guarantor) shall express himself/herself to all topic proposals that were offered by the supervisors of the FT in the field/degree program or specialization guaranteed by them.




  • The guarantor can:

    1. Approve the topic proposal: the acceptance of the topic and its display to students;

    1. Reject topic proposal: the definitive rejection of the topic;

    1. Comment on the topic proposal: the return of the topic to the supervisor of the FT to revise


  • For all of the options provided for in the preceding paragraph, the guarantor may insert a comment with the notification to the supervisor of the FT stating the reasons for the guarantors decision. For the option of the comment, a guarantors comment is compulsory. After incorporating comments, the guarantor may approve of the revised topic proposal of the FT.



Art. 6The selection of the approved topic of the FT by the student



  • By 31.5. in the relevant academic year, the student shall select the topic of his/her final thesis from a menu of approved topics of the FT in Tematikon and makes its reservation.

  • The reservation made is not sufficient to assign the topic of the FT to the The student is obliged to contact the supervisor after reservation and consult the reserved topic with him/her.

  • In the case of an agreement between the supervisor of the thesis and the student, the supervisor shall assign the reserved topic of the FT in Tematikon to the student.

  • If a student cannot agree with the supervisor or the student despite the supervisors formal notice does not respond and he/she does not consult the reserved topic, the supervisor cancels the reservation of the topic of the FT in Tematikon and returns so the topic back to the menu as available for other students.




  • If the offer of the approved topics has been fully used, the student shall contact the respective guarantor with a request for proposing the next procedure.



PART THREE

THE 3RD YEAR BACHELORS DEGREE STUDENTS

AND THE 2ND YEAR FOLLOW-UP MASTERS DEGREE STUDENTS

Art. 7Document creation for the description of the FT



  • Documents for the description of the FT are inserted into the Information system of the Silesian University (hereinafter referred to as IS SU).




  • By 31.10. in the relevant academic year, after consultation with the supervisor of the FT, who shall perform all activities in the IS SU, which are necessary for matching the description of the FT with the student, the student shall fill in the documents for the description of the FT in the I




  • The title of the FT may be specified at this stage under Article 4, paragraph 2, point e).




  • The document for the description of the FT shall contain inter alia the general contents of the FT. These are determined individually based on the student's consultations with the supervisor of the final thesis. The recommended general contents is a continuous text containing the objective of the final thesis, a research problem (areas), a selection of the methodology and data, a procedure for achieving the objective or possible other necessary parts of the FT



Art. 8Print and signature of the description of the FT



  • By 30. 11. in the relevant academic year secretariats of the departments shall ensure the print of 3 pieces of the description of the FT along with the supervisors and the guarantors signatures.




  • The supervisor of the FT has the right not to sign the description of the FT, if it does not correspond to results of the consultations or the student has not consulted it with the supervisor of the FT.




  • The guarantor has the right not to sign the description of the FT if the content does not match the previously approved topic and is not in accordance with the focus of the applicable field/degree program or specialization.



Art. 9Handover of the description of the FT to the student



  • From the beginning of the examination period for the winter semester of the relevant academic year, the secretariats of departments shall handover 2 pieces of the description of the FT to the students and ask for their signatures. The student is obliged to appear in person for this purpose to the secretariat of the relevant department.



Art. 10Change of the description of the FT



  • The description of the FT, which has been handed over to the student under Art. 9 may be changed only in the case of serious circumstances which must be duly listed in the "Request for a Change of the FT", based on the respective guarantors assessment and with the consent of the Dean of the SU SBA.



PART FOUR FINAL PROVISIONS

Art. 11 Final provisions



  • The Deans Instruction No. 7/2017 The Implementation Procedure for the Assignment of Research Theses is repealed by this instruction.

  • The approved topics, their reservation and the description of the FT created before the effect of this Deans Instruction remain valid.




  • This Internal Standard becomes effective on the date of publication on the
