An excavation is suggested to be made as shown in the figure below, where the soil properties are as follows:
Top Layer: c’ = 14 kPa, = 11o , = 18.0 kN/m3
Middle Layer: c’ = 11 kPa,= 12 o , = 19.0 kN/m3
Bottom Layer: c’ = 10 kPa, = 14o , = 19.5 kN/m3
Task:
Divide the soil mass into 20 slices and evaluate the stability of the slope using the ordinary (Felonious) method of slices (Note: ignore the tension crack). Your evaluation should be conducted using the software package SLOPE/W (the software is available on BB and a brief user manual is enclosed). You should submit your answers in the form of design report that should include the following information:
Introduction:
Target of the report, details for the problem, software used…etc.
Modelling using SLOPE/W:
- A brief on the SLOPE/W software.
- Model representation considering problem details. Include a table with all input parameters and values.
Results:
A- The critical slip circle, its factor of safety, its coordinates and the area of soil enclosed within the critical slip circle.
B- The safety factor contours.
C- The force polygon and forces acting on two selected slices (No. 3 and 15)
D- Considering a gradual change in water level due to temporary deteriorating, see figure below, re-investigate the stability of the slope at stage 1 and 2 of the deteriorating. Show modification on the model and tabulate your findings to compare results(for items A to C) before and after water level change including the two stages 1 and 2.
Discussion and recommendation:
- Assess the stability of the slope considering the obtained results for the above 3 cases (before and after water level change for stages 1 and 2) and state which case is critical for the slope.
- Based on the conclusion of above point, suggest suitable engineering measures to ensure the safety of the slope (if needed).
Geo technical Report Presentation
Your submission should be prepared as a report (not dissimilar to that which are produced in industry for similar types of investigations), using professional communication and presentation.
You may make use of appendices if absolutely necessary; however, please remember that appendices should only include supplementary information, not information critical to the purpose of the report; appendices are not to be used as a way to get around a page limit requirement. If you do choose to use appendices, then they must be referred to
