You can find full instructions for this assessment piece HLTH2107: Research and study skills 2 Assessment exercise 1: Critical Review 1

Assessment context:

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is an important component of developing skills and delivering care for health practitioners. The use of informed interventions and service delivery ensures the best possible outcomes for patients and clients. We have learnt how to search for evidence using a variety of tools, but how do we know if the article we are reading is ‘good research?’ Critical appraisal is more than simply reading a published article and implementing findings. It is being able to determine whether the results are trustworthy, the methods are correct, and the conclusions are considered within the overall strengths and limitations of the study. Critically appraising literature is an important skill for all health workers. Therefore, the purpose of this assessment is to critically appraise qualitative and quantitative research using appropriate tools.

You will find useful tools to assist you with this assessment on FLO. For this task you are required to carry out a critical review of. TWO published articles, one qualitative article and one quantitative article using appropriate Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) tools. The CASP tools are provided on FLO.

Part-1: Choosing your articles-

Choose TWO published articles of interest, one should report qualitative research and the other should report quantitative research methods.

  • Qualitative article- Choose ONE research article that reports qualitative methods and results in an area you find interesting.
  • Quantitative article- Choose ONE randomised controlled trial (RCT) in an area of interest (should be the same or similar topic chosen for qualitative article). Make sure that the RCT is not a proposed study (i.e., the article should present and discuss results).

Part-2: Critically review your articles-

Using the CASP tools provided on FLO and your notes from workshops critically review each article

Qualitative article: (Approximately 750 words)

  • Complete the relevant CASP for qualitative research provided in the assessment folder on FLO

Assessment Exercise 1:Critical Review

When completing the template, you should support your statements with evidence from the chosen research paper and /or other research journal articles or textbooks and include a reference list. You are required to answer the following questions in essay style:

  • Are the results of the study valid?
  • What are the results?
  • Will the results help locally? (In this section comment on whether the findings will affect your future career. Will the findings inform your future practice?)

Quantitative article: (Approximately 750 words)

  • Complete the relevant CASP for Quantitative research (RCT template) available in in the assessment folder.

When completing the template, you should support your statements with evidence from the chosen research paper and /or other research journal articles or textbooks and include a reference list. You are required to answer the following questions in essay style:

  • Is the basic study design valid for a randomised controlled trial?
  • Was the study methodologically sound?
  • What are the results?
  • Will the results help locally? (In this section comment on whether the findings will affect your future career. Will the findings inform your future practice?)

This is a 1500-word assessment worth 30% of your overall grade. To model professional practice, the word limit is a maximum limit, and for a meaningful attempt the completion of the CASP tool should aim to be close to, but not over 1500 words of your own content (not including pre-populated template text or reference list).
