MEDIA(CORECONCEPTS)ASSIGNMENT
DUEFeb15uploadtoBrightspace[15% of final grade]
Forthisassignmentyouwillanalyseanewsarticle usingconceptsfromHuman Geography.Youmay choose any news (ie. current events) media article (eg. anewsitem rather than a blog, editorial, opinion piece or journal article) that interests you as long as it was published after Jan 6, 2025.
Choose an article that is approximately page - 1page in length. See below for a list ofpossible sources.Ifyouare notsure whetherthearticle youhave selectedisappropriate, youmaysendme the link or a copy of the article in advance.
THEASSIGNMENT
- Fully and accurately summarise the article (approx. 200 words, double-spaced), and
- Write 2paragraphs(300wordseach,double-spaced)connectingthearticletotwodifferent geographic concepts selected from the list below.
Summary:Begin byintroducingthearticle tothereader whowrote it,publishedit, etc. itmustbe clear to the reader which article you are summarising (papers that do not indicate clearly in the summarywhicharticle isunderanalysiswillreceive 0). Thenprovide a clearsummaryofthearticle.
Analysis:Define the concepts early on -you can even open with the definition. Provide as full and complete a definition as possible. Then use the definition to explain how the concept can aid in understanding the context (the news item) you are analysing. Also explain how the information in thearticle illustratestheconcepts.Trackbackandforthbetweentheconceptandthe informationin the article to keep the connection tight and focused.
USEofgenerativeAI,suchasCHATGPTorother generative, editing, orparaphrasingservice.)is prohibited. If you use it for ideas, then cite it properly (ask a librarian how to do it) andput everything into your own words.Heres a much better idea: just use your own brain : )
~In my experience, students come up with more original and interesting ideas than ChatGPT and therefore the students who use their own ideas get better grades. Also, they are practicing the importantskillsofthinkingcriticallyandwritingsothatwhen theygraduate, theywillknowhowto do those things. Those who rely on Generative AI? Not so much. Think about why you are here. To get a well-paid job, you need to know how to think and write well.
