It is required to meet and demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

1. Design a complex electronic circuit from reference and first principles.2. Perform complex analysis of electronic circuits in simulators exemplified by Multisim.3. Design construct, produce and critically evaluate PCB based systems.4. Understand how to populate test and fault find a printed circuit board.5. Demonstrate knowledge of basic hand skills.6. CE721 Resit Assignment (part A) Moisture Detector.

A useful circuit for a range of applications is a moisture detection indicator. The below has been taken from [1]

In summary the circuit illuminates an led when the moisture exceeds a threshold. You are required to simulate the circuit on an electronic simulator of your choosing. There are many freely available and I would recommend a student version of Multisim. Or via Horizon VPN to our labs. You are required to produce a screen grab picture of your printed circuit board design and thoroughly document your test and analysis findings. There are guidelines to the report writing on the CE721 Moodle site https://moodle.essex.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=3692&section=6The report must include:

A detailed study of methods of potential implementation: e.g breadboard, Veroboard and PCB. You should discuss at length the merits of each.

A description of the purpose and operation of an oscilloscope.

A description of the purpose and operation of a signal generator.

Graphical representation of simulated behaviour.

An explanation of how the PCB would be ordered and manufactured including file types required.

Comprehensive description of how your circuit could be tested. Suggest where potential errors may occur and how they can be identified.

Documentation of populating a PCB and the hand skills/equipment necessary.

Evidence of use of a PCB manufacturer such as PCB Way.

A bill of materials (list of components and cost).

This part A is worth 50% of the overall CE721 mark

CE721 Resit Assignment part B

By this stage you will be an expert (hopefully) in Multisim (or the simulator of your choosing), PCB design, testing and testing procedures. You are now required to design, build and verify the operation of one of the following:

A simple radio receiver or transmitter using transistors and discrete components.

A digital capacitance meter.

A bargraph based spectrum analyser.

A dc to ac inverter.

A resonant power transfer system (low power).

A circuit of your choosing.

It is expected that your circuit will have an associated pcb design. delivery of the PCB mask and management of the timeframes required to complete the above.

This part is worth 50% of the CE721 overall mark and documentation should follow similar guidelines to Part A.
