Task Summary

For this assignment, students will need to individually write a 1500-word business report in response to the case study provided by your lecturer. There are two components:

  1. Conceptual questions about user interface design (UI) within the systems analysis and design process.
  2. Practical questions in response to the case study provided by your lecturer.

Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.

Context

While useability and human computer interaction have always been important, rapid growth of digital transformation has made user experience (UX) and user interface design (UI) central to the successful adoption of systems. In this section, you will focus on ensuring that the requirements for designing and building an excellent user interface are captured and documented.

This is a continuation of the analysis and design process that was initiated in Assessment 1 with requirements analysis and continued with process and data modelling in Assessment 2. You will use the same case study.

Task Instructions

To complete this task, you must:

  1. Carefully review the case study provided to you by your lecturer.
  2. Review your subject notes, essential readings and learning activities to ensure that you are well prepared for the assignment.
  3. Create a report plan and identify all the key components that will be required in your report. 4. Follow the report structure:

Note: The report is brief and therefore will not require an executive summary or abstract.

Title page: should include subject ID, subject name, assignment title, student’s name, student number and lecturer’s name

Table of contents: include all key components of this assessment

Introduction (75–100 words):

This serves as your statement of purpose. You will tell the reader what you are going to cover in your report. You will need to inform the reader about:

  • your area of research and its context
  • the key concepts you will be addressing
  • what the reader can expect to find in the body of the report.

Body of the report (800–850 words)

1. Conceptual questions:

  • What is user interface design and what is its purpose?
  • What is ‘usability’ and why is it important in user interface design?
  • Why should user needs be considered when designing or modifying systems?
  • What is the difference between UX and UI?
  • Discuss the concepts of consistency and discoverability in the context of user interface design. Why are these concepts important to the success of the design?

2. Practical tasks:

  • Select one of the use cases that you created and documented in Assessment 1.
  • Create a system sequence diagram for the use case identifying the messages from the external actor into the system with all required data flows.
  • Using the system sequence diagram, complete a dialogue to outline the user system interaction.
  • Design a user input screen/s for the dialogue.

3. Layout:

  • The report should use Arial or Calibri 11-point font and should have 1.5 line spacing for ease of reading. A page number should be inserted on the bottom of each page.
  • With the required diagrams, due attention should be given to pagination to avoid loss of meaning and continuity by unnecessarily splitting information over two pages. Diagrams must carry the appropriate captioning.
