PART 1:
Assessment Brief
PART 1:
Write an assessment based on the video script presented in public media statement. In the reflective element of this assessment learners are to justify their choice of a) spokesperson/spoke people, b) target audience, c) setting, d) language (verbal and non-verbal), e) distribution channels (not limited to broadcast media indeed, you may decide that other distribution channels may be more appropriate to reach your target audience) and indeed the entire composition of the video recording. In doing so, you are expected to critically draw on contemporary, scholarly literature and real-life crisis examples to further validate the choices made. Finally, learners are to critically reflect on the execution of their video, including thoughts on decisions made and how they might approach future (media) statements in a different way. It should have at least 10 to 15 scholarly literature which should support your choices made. Use Chicago 17B referencing. The assessment should have 1000-word excluding the references and citation.
Assessment Brief / Scenario:
For more than 100 years, the Premier Automobile Club (PAC) has existed as a membership organisation, advocating for and behalf of its member on issues such as safe roads, safer cars and safer driving behaviours.
PAC offers car, home, life and travel insurance, as well as roadside assistance. In addition to its insurance offerings, PAC seeks to build a sense of belonging via its local community-based PAC Hubs, providing a platform for members to come together at a local level for car repair workshops, meets, outings for car enthusiasts, etc all run by community volunteers.
PAC has carefully positioned itself as a responsible organisation and good corporate citizen, committed to investing back into the community in the way of school-based road safety programs and support of local community groups (among others). Positive member relationships are a key priority for PACs senior management team.
At 3pm on 11th October the PAC media team receives a phone call from a journalist stating she has received a file with the details of what appear to be the details of at least 500,000 individual PAC members. This includes personal information such as emails, drivers license numbers, addresses, and phone numbers and in some cases, banking information. In addition, the document also has details of approximately 20,000 corporate customers. It is becoming apparent a data breach, on a large scale, has occurred.
A data breach is any unauthorised, unintended or unexpected access, modification, loss or disclosure of information.
Almost immediately, the (social) media monitoring team picks up on a rapidly increasing number of PAC related posts by apparent members who report to have had an extraordinary payment, purporting to be authorised by PAC, taken out of their account. A follow up conversation with members of PACs community reference group brings to light that impacted members appear to have received an email, again purporting to be from PAC, apologising for the unusual deduction, but assuring recipients that although no refunds could be made at this point, any additional funds would be credited towards their existing PAC account and hence future payments.
A quick call to the member, finance and IT departments confirm that neither the deductions nor the emails were authorised by PAC.
By now its after 4pm. The media team receives a request from the national broadcaster to provide a statement on camera within the next hour. Decisions need to be made urgently:
Should PAC provide a verbal media statement for national TV/radio? Or should a more localised / member orientated video statement take priority? (in the latter case, what would be your distribution channel of choice? How do you justify not going on record for the national evening news?)
In either case, who should speak? Where? And how much should be disclosed about this unfolding issue? You certainly dont want to a) undermine your existing reputation as a trustworthy organisation and b) create a sense of panic.
You may invent additional details, provided they are realistic and do not change the overall narrative of the above scenario.
Public (media) statement (Video recording script based on above case scenario)
Hi everybody, I am X, CEO of PAC. I am here to apologise for a very unfortunate event that happened. This evening, it has come to our attention that a data breach affected some PAC members. This includes some personal information such as emails, drivers license numbers, etc. At this stage, the extent of the data breach and how it happened is still unclear. Based on the information we have at the moment, We can assure you that not all our customers have been affected.
Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to fix the problem and help the people who are affected by this problem. We have been working with government agencies, the Australian federal police and other organisations, including financial institutions and licensing agencies, to update our customers. We have meticulously worked on our logs to see what information was breached. As an organisation that genuinely cares about our customers and the community, safeguarding our customer information is of utmost importance to us. We are reaching out to the media within 2 hours of the issue coming to our attention in an attempt to reach out to a maximum number of customers quickly. We are requesting all our customers to be on alert, and we will be doing our best to provide updates as we gather more insights into the situation. We aim to provide customers, including the ones who are not affected, an update every 4 hours based on the progress of our review.
An independent review has been launched to find the reason, fix it as quickly as possible, and take enough measures so that it will never happen again.

PART 2
Strong team leaders make sure they attend to the mechanics of the team's work, but they do much more than this. They attend to the human needs of individual employees by encouraging motivated behavior and the self-efficacy needed to persist on challenging tasks. Moreover, leaders promote member identity, establish group goals, and attend to member needs for bonding and recognition. In general, effective group leaders integrate team members efforts, promote friendships, mitigate conflicts, and enhance collaboration. (Ford, Piccolo, and Ford 2017,3)
