Introduction.
Ageing results from the impact of the accumulation of a wide variety of molecular and cellular damage over time. This leads to a gradual decrease in physical and mental capacity, a growing risk of disease and ultimately death. Beyond this biological changes, ageing is often associated with other life transitions such as retirement, relocation to more appropriate housing and the death of friends and partners. (WHO,2022). The proportion of people aged 65 years and above is increasing at a faster rate than those below that age. This means that the percentage of the global population aged 65 and above is expected to rise from 10% in 2022 to 16% in 2050.It is projected that by 2050, the number of individuals aged 65years or above across the world will be twice the number of children under age 5 and almost equivalent to the number of children under 12 years. (WPP,2022). This report focuses on older Australians generally those aged 65 and above. Australias population is ageing due to increasing life expectancy and declining fertility rates. At 30 June 2020, there was an estimated 4.2 million older Australians (Aged 65 and over) with older people comprising 16% of the total Australian population (ABS 2020b). By 2026, the proportion of the elderly population in Australia is expected to reach 20% of the overall population (Commonwealth of Australia,2015).
The Australian government spends around $10 Billion per Annum on the aged care sector with around two thirds of this expenditures directed to residential aged care. (PA).
Population ageing is poised to become one of the most significant social transformations of the twenty-first century, with implications for nearly all sectors of society, including labour and financial markets, the demand for services such as housing, transportation, and social protection. (UN).
Healthy Ageing is the process of developing and maintaining the functional abilities that enables wellbeing in older age. (WHO). This involves the ability to meet their basic needs, to learn, make decisions, build and maintain relationships, to be mobile and to contribute to society. Positive Aging references the ability to thrive in later years despite Challenges that accompany the process of growing older. (Ranzijn R) .
