Work Placement AssessmentsAs part of the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting Radiograph, students will complete a range of assessments whilst completing their work placement.

The practical component is designed to provide students with real industry experience and equip them with the tools to become a proficient dental assistant.

Students are highly recommended to organise vaccinations in preparation for working in the health industry:

Hepatitis B

Whooping Cough

Annual Flu Vaccination

General Students are insured to work in their practical placement for a total of 250 hours. Please enquire if a copy of the Public and Product Liability Insurance certificate is required.

The practical component of this course is split into two areas.

Assessment Requirements

Logbook 250 hours

Observation Checklist To be signed by supervisors to verify that they have observed the student completing relevant criteria

Logbook

Students are required to complete a minimum of 250 hours of work placement. These hours are recorded in the students logbook and signed by their supervisor. The 250 hours are designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain practical skills at the workplace and understand exactly what it means to operate as a dental assistant.

The students supervisor will also need to complete observation checklists to verify that they have observed the student completing relevant tasks within these 250 hours.

Observations Checklists

The student is required to demonstrate a range of important tasks as part of their course. These tasks are to be observed by the workplace supervisor. The workplace supervisor will provide feedback to the student and complete the supervisor checklist and report.

If a student or supervisor has any questions, they should contact Foundation Education on 1300 130 157 or dental.support@foundationeducation.edu.au

Workplace Supervisor IntroductionWorkplace Observer IntroductionAs part of their training, all students are required to participate in a structured work placement. This placement is used in conjunction with the online learning program as conducted by Foundation Education for the course HLT45015 Certificate IV in Dental Assisting - Radiography.

The aim of the structured work placement is to give students the opportunity to gain practical experience in a real work environment in order to complement the knowledge gained through the online learning as provided by Foundation Education. The emphasis is on students developing practical skills, integrating theory into practice, and analysing structures, functions, policies, and procedures within the context of being a dental assistant.

The student will be required to complete, at minimum, the below hours of work as a dental assistant:

50 hrs in a simulated environment; and

250 hrs in a dental practice

As the supervisor, you will be required to observe these sessions and complete observation checklists, which can be found in the students workbook. These sessions relate directly to the units of competency that the student is studying with Foundation Education.

It is important to note that although the number and type of hours is a guide only, they are the minimum sessions that the student needs to complete. As the supervisor, you can provide the student with additional experience and request that they complete additional tasks that are specific to your workplace.

You are also required to sign each entry that the student makes in this logbook. Your signature verifies to Foundation Education that the student has completed the sessions listed in the logbook. At the end of this logbook, please complete the supervisors report and add any final comments on either the students or Foundation Education.

This logbook must be uploaded to the students MyeCampus. The student is responsible for this. It is important that the student be aware that they will not graduate from their course until this logbook has been uploaded to MyeCampus and verified by a Foundation Education assessor.

Qualifications

As a workplace supervisor, you are required to hold the following qualification:

Observation ChecklistStudent Introduction Simulated and Practical hoursTo support the work placement that you have completed, your supervisor will need to complete the observation report for all units of competency within this qualification. You will need to complete:

50hrs in a simulated environment; and

250hrs in a dental practice

These simulated hours allow you to role play scenarios based on the expectations of the role and the practical component to follow. You will notice that there are two observation checklists for HLTDEN001 Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures appears. Your workplace supervisor must complete both observation reports once the tasks have been successfully completed by you and observed by your supervisor. The observation reports are used to record the outcomes of ongoing observations by the workplace supervisor throughout your period of study. These observations are made at the workplace under normal operating conditions and are based on competencies outlined by the Health Services Training Package.

Your workplace supervisor needs to ensure that you have received adequate instruction to successfully and safely complete each task.

Your workplace supervisor also needs to ensure that the venue, equipment, and materials are both available and safe. Simulated conditions are only to be used when the work placement environment is limited by safety and environmental factors and by human and physical resources.

You must be observed performing the task on multiple occasions, and your workplace supervisor should be confident that you are able to perform the task consistently before they initial and date the column associated with the task.

Your workplace supervisor will grade your performance for each criterion with one of the following:

Student meets task criteria without assistance

Student requires assistance to meet the stated criteria

Student did not prepare accordingly.

Not applicable

Note: You are required to perform each task to satisfaction. If you do not, your workplace supervisor must ensure adequate opportunity for you to achieve a satisfactory result by providing further instruction.

Your supervisor will need to verify you have practiced the preparation of 3 patients for dental radiographic imaging procedures using the observation checklist (below) as a guide. No member of the general public may be present. Please simulate practice with work colleagues.

These simulated hours allow you to role play scenarios using the observation checklist prior to demonstrating your skills in the workplace, and working with members of the general public. Document your simulated hours and tasks performed using the table below, prior to your supervisor gathering evidence of your performance with members of the general public.

Please record simulated hours below.

This form is to be signed off by employer/supervisor.

The student is to fill out this section of the table (white columns) for each simulation they have completed. The employer/supervisor on the shift needs to sign off for each simulation completed (the grey columns).

Instructions for the student

The observation checklist is used by your workplace supervisor to observe you demonstrating the application of the required skills and knowledge during your work placement.

There are three main components to this Observation Task:

You are required to demonstrate your ability to apply safe work practices whilst preparing 3 patients for an X-ray.

You are required to apply quality assurance steps during the production of 3 X-ray images to ensure they are of diagnostic standard, and ensure that technical errors are minimised by implementing corrective measures.

You must submit copies of three X-rays you have produced to My eCampus. Ensure all confidential patient information is removed from each image and the X-ray identified by using the Patient ID number from your workplace Patient Management System.

As these will be conducted in a work environment, you will need to ensure that you behave in a professional manner and in accordance with the Code of Practice and Safety Guide for Radiation and the WHS policies and procedures of your workplace. Ensure that you have access to this documentation and familiarise yourself with these before attempting the practical assessment task.

You and your supervisor will need to sign and date this page once all performance tasks have been completed to industry standards. You will then submit these documents to be reviewed and assessed by your qualified trainer and assessor.
