Task 1 Essay, Police

Topics
Choose one of the following:

1. Analyse the nature and causes of ethical dilemmas experienced by frontline police officers. Discuss strategies for ensuring a culture of integrity in police work.
or
2. Discuss the nature and causes of misconduct in police work. Identify key police integrity management strategies and their rationales.
Please note the following:

1. For Topic 1, provide coverage of the range of dilemmas normally identified by scholars, and then also engage in a more in-depth analysis of one area, using a scenario. You can develop your own scenario or use one from a source. The in- depth analysis should make use of the ethical frameworks of ethical formalism, utilitarianism and public service ethics.

2. With Topic 2, make use of case studies as sources of evidence. You should make use of most of the relevant case studies, but you can also go into depth with one or two.
3. With both topics, locate your analysis in the wider context of public sector ethics and accountability (Week 1).
4. Include at least two additional sources from the library or the internet, such as research articles and newspaper reports, ensuring there is no plagiarism in usage.

5. Please use the APA7 referencing systems.

Submission
Submit via Turnitin at the course website site. Turnitin checks for copying from published source material and essays submitted by students in the current and previous semesters. Please submit a draft and use the Turnitin result to remove any plagiarism. Markers also conduct their own checks. Turnitin also provides a report on AI usage, although this is currently not available to students. Please do not use generative AI. These apps cannot meet the criteria and will only cause problems. Grammar assistants are OK.

Marking Rubric
7 x 5 marks = 35:
1. Summary introduction and conclusion, paragraph focus, logical sequencing, clarity of expression, concise and keeps to the word limit
2. Focus on the topic, relevance
3. Coverage of all set course material, integration of two additional sources
4. Accurate standard referencing
5. Independent control and synthesis of source material in student's own words (absence of major and minor plagiarism)
6. Use of evidence and examples to illustrate arguments
7. Different perspectives are compared and contrasted; attention to problems, issues, debates and conflicts
Extension Requests

E-mail tprenzler@usc.edu.au with a nominated new due date that follows from attached documentary evidence of genuine incapacity. If at all possible, make requests prospective, but retrospective applications will be considered. Preferred documentary evidence includes a signed scanned note from a doctor or counsellor. Other evidence which will be considered includes a statutory declaration, or an e-mail from a parent or close relative or employer.
