Question Answer
In your own words, what was the aim of the study?
(0.75/1 mark) The aim of the study is to determine how effective exergaming can be in improving the health and well-being of university student and the effects it will have on depression, anxiety and perceived stress over a 6-week period.
What is the main argument in the introduction?
(2/3 marks)
Is the argument convincing? Why, or why not?
(0.5/1 mark) The main argument for the article is that mental health issues among university student causes large number of health issues including anxiety, depression and stress, and that campus facilities unable to adequately deal with the increase number of student requesting mental health services.
It also shows that previous research has provided research to show that Sport-based interventions have both mentally and physically benefits, that the use of exercise has correlation to peoples overall quality of life.
Yes, I believe the argument is convincing as the Statistic provided show an increased number of students 6.6% in 2007 to 11.8% in 2017 needing to access mental health. Previous research has been used to affirm the statements that exercise has health benefits.
Identify the independent variable/s (0.5/1 mark) and dependent variable/s (0.5/1 mark). The Independent variables include the iVR fitness game FitXR, as it controls the type of exercise, the possible issues e.g motion sickness, gives a variety of sessions. It gives a set scenario for success, that being performing several punching combos on a sphere without getting hit by blocks.
The dependent variable are participants anxiety, depression, and perceived stress levels and the acceptability and usability of the game.
Does this study have a within-groups or between-groups design?
(1/1 mark) As all the people participating in the testing were required to complete the same process, that being two 30 minute iVR session per week the study has within-groups.
What research method was used in this study?
(1/1 mark) The research method used was Experimental as the manipulation of vaiarable to assess cause and effect, the iVR was chose due to the factors it would have on the participants, and questionaries used to determine the effects.
State one main result reported in the study.
(0.75/1 mark)
What is an alternative explanation for the result? Provide one example.
(0.75/1 mark)
One of the main results reported was that playing the iVR boxing exergame for 6 weeks (ie, 2 sessions per week; 30 minutes per session) would likely reduce depression levels among university student.
An alternative explanation to the reduced levels of depression could be the participants have decreased due to external factors. This could be that the students work load had reduced, their personal life had improved, they may have gotten a partner, they could be eating a sleeping more healthily.
Are the results generalisable (from the sample, and in space and time)? Why or why not?
(0.25/1 mark) The results of the study are generalisable as the level of depression, anxiety and perceived stress could be applied to settings outside the laboratory. The study included an equal number of men and women and provided adequate reasons for exclusion of participants. However, this level was effected by the factor that it was done in a very controlled environment, that being a location with no windows.
Identify and briefly explain one methodological strength of the research
(0.5/1 mark) A strength of the study was that they controlled the number of times that a participant was able to utilise the iVR, that being two time per week from approximately 30 minutes. This allows us to know that all participants underwent the same amount of suggested therapy.

Critical Analysis: Part 2 Critical analysis of three journal articles (35%; 1650 words)
This second part of your critical analysis assessment requires you to critically analyse the information inthree provided journal articles. You need to demonstrate your ability to read and evaluate the key information presented in the provided articles.
Note that one of these journal articles is the same article you read for Part 1 of the assessment. You will need to read it again. There are two new articles to also read.
In order to demonstrate you have critically analysed the articles and identified the key points, you will be required to summarise your findings in a cohesive and coherent way.
Read theWhile You Read Guidepresented below. This table highlights the key information you will need to obtain from the three articles for this assessment.

This is where you will write one cohesive and coherent piece critically analysing and discussing your findings from the three articles. In your assignment you will need to have a clearintroduction section, body sectionanddiscussion/conclusion section.
Introduction:clearly, but briefly, state the main message of the three articles and the aim of the studies (a few sentences should suffice);
Body:write your critical analysis synthesising your findings from the three articles based on the questions highlighted in the introduction, methods, results and strengths & limitations sections of theWhile You Read Guide; and ensure that your discussion is a summary and synthesis of the three articles and not just answers to the questions about each article, separately.
Discussion/Conclusion:In the conclusion section bring the summary together by addressing the following questions based on your evaluation of the three articles (you can refer to the conclusion/discussion section of the journal articles to help you with this):
What are the theoretical and practical implications of this research?
What are the recommendations for future research?
Draw a conclusion. This will be based on your evaluation of the research.
REFERENCING:You will need to reference the three articlesin text throughoutthis assignment and provide areference listincluding the references for these three articles. You do not need to reference any other sources.

Advice and resources
Part 1 & 2
Please ensure you have completed all learning activities for Week 2 and 3. You may like to consult the readings/videos from these weeks whilst completing both Part 1 and Part 2 of your assignment.
Part 2
When you get to Part 2, some tips for reading:
Before you begin writingyour critical analysis for Part 2 of the assignment, read each of the articles once to obtain a general understanding of what they are about.
Then re-read the articles with theWhile You Read Guidehandy to identify the main points the authors are making. You may need to underline or highlight these as you proceed through the article. You can also use the margin on the article to restate what the main points are in your own words. Keep this brief.
Distinguish the main points from examples. You generally do not need to include examples in your summary unless they are important to your discussion.
Look at the points that you have underlined/highlighted/written in your own words in each of the articles and write your summary.
You may need to redraft your summary a few times to make it concise, coherent and cohesive. It would be a good idea to start this assessment task early.
Ensure that your summary comprises a critical evaluation of the three articles and not merely a description of the discussion.
Your summary and synthesis of the main arguments from the three journal articles should be as far as possible be written in your own words. Avoid directly quoting from the journal articles.
You may also like to refer to the following resources:
The readings/videos from Topic 2 and 3 may be useful for Parts 1 and 2 of the assignment.
The video on summary writing and synthesising a journal article from Topic 6 may be useful for part 2 of the assignment.
