Health issue: Smoking prevention and control in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations

This assessment requires you to conduct a problem analysis to inform a solution to a public health issue. The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the magnitude of the health issue and the factors that contribute to the development or prevention of the health issue.

WORD LIMIT: Length: 1000 words. This is a hard upper limit (excluding references and literature search strategy)

REFERENCING: APA style

Criteria

Your assessment is divided into two parts.

Part A:Magnitude of the public health issue

In this section you will briefly describe the burden and magnitude of the public health issue within the identified target population.

This section is worth 30%.

Part B: Problem analysis

In this section you will conduct a problem analysis of the health issue by identifying, describing, and critiquing risk factors and/or enablers for the health issue of relevance to the identified target population.

This section is worth 60%.

Note: this section of the assignment requires you to conduct a comprehensive search of the literature. You need to produce a 1-page summary as an appendix to your assignment (not included in the word count), documenting your literature search strategy conducted for this problem analysis.

You will also be assessed on your ability to write using appropriate academic structure and style (10%).

Always go to the primary source rather than relying on someone else to have represented the source accurately (i.e. avoid secondary citations).

Include your literature search strategy on the last page of your assessment document. Failing to include your search strategy may result in a penalty of 5% of the total possible marks being applied.

Review question:

What are the main concepts that make up my review question?

Are these terms well defined and unambiguous for a database i.e. searchable?

List synonyms for your concepts. Think of alternative spellings, word endings and/or phrasings for these terms. Consider broad and specific terms related to the concept

Note: you may have more or fewer concepts than 4.

Concept 4 OR combines terms for the same concept together

Main Concept List keyword synonyms here

Is it a searchable term? List subject headings here e.g. MeSH, EmtreeAre there any relevant limits I can apply to my search?

e.g. date of publication, language, geographic region, publication type (e.g., different types of reviews, original research studies, e.g. intervention research, qualitative studies, epidemiological research), population type, study type (e.g. RCT, observational, qualitative), outcomes of interest, setting

List the citations of a few relevant papers you have found from your scoping searches

These can help you check if your search strategy is picking up relevant results

What search methods will I use to find evidence/information for my review?

List a comprehensive selection of electronic databases with relevant coverage

List any other relevant information sources e.g. grey literature (if relevant to your question and review type)

List any supplementary methods e.g. hand searching, citation chaining

Briefly describe the magnitude of the public health issue 30 pts

HIGH DISTINCTION

Constructs a focused summary of the magnitude of the public health issue, including describing the prevalence and burden of the problem, as well as the populations affected. The reader is left in no doubt as to the specific context (e.g. target population, setting) being addressed in the assignment. Identifies contextually relevant limitations in the data presented and explains their implications for the health issue. Description is well supported by appropriate references. References show evidence of wider reading.

25 pts

DISTINCTION

Constructs a focused summary of the magnitude of the public health issue, including describing the prevalence and burden of the problem, as well as the populations affected. It is reasonably clear what specific context (e.g. target population, setting) will be addressed in the assignment. Identifies contextually relevant limitations in the data presented. Description is well supported by appropriate references.

20.02 pts

CREDIT

Summarises the magnitude of the public health issue, including describing the prevalence and burden of the problem, as well as the populations affected. It is somewhat clear what specific context (e.g. target population, setting) will be addressed in the assignment. Identifies any limitations in the data presented. References are appropriate but may be limited.

15 pts

PASS

Summarises the magnitude of the public health issue, including describing the prevalence and burden of the problem. May include some unnecessary information. The specific context (e.g. target population, setting) being addressed in the assignment is vague. References are (mostly) appropriate but may be limited.

7.5 pts

FAIL

Does not describe the magnitude of the public health issue appropriately. May provide statistics on the issue but these are incomplete, inconsistent, or inappropriate. Lacks appropriate references.

0 pts

NOT ADDRESSED / 30 pts

Conduct a problem analysis of the health issue by by identifying, describing, and critiquing risk factors and/or enablers for the health issue of relevance to the identified target population 60 pts

HIGH DISTINCTION

Identifies and describes relevant and influential risk factors and/or enablers, going beyond the immediate or proximal risk factors/enablers to consider the underlying causes of the health issue. Critically analyses the relationship between known risk factors and/or enablers and the health issue, including assessing the strength of the relationship and the implications of any important limitations in the available evidence. Prioritises the identified risk factors/enablers. Arguments are evidence-informed and well supported by appropriate references. References show evidence of wider reading.

50.01 pts

DISTINCTION

Identifies and describes relevant and influential risk factors and/or enablers, going beyond the immediate or proximal risk factors/enablers to consider the underlying causes of the health issue. Highlights any limitations in the available evidence. Some prioritisation of the risk factors/enablers is apparent. Arguments are evidence-informed and well supported by appropriate references.

39.99 pts

CREDIT

Identifies and describes relevant risk factors and/or enablers. Some prioritisation of the risk factors/enablers is apparent. References are appropriate but may be limited.

30 pts

PASS

Identifies and describes relevant risk factors and/or enablers. References are (mostly) appropriate but may be limited.

15 pts

FAIL

Identified risk factors/enablers are inappropriate, lack clarity, or are presented as a list, without any depth of analysis. Lacks appropriate references.

Develop a coherent literature search strategy 0.05 pts

HIGH DISTINCTION

Formulates a relevant, clear, and focused research question. There is an adequate number of searchable concepts and all are correctly identified. Synonyms are comprehensive in number and are grouped correctly. All selected databases are relevant and appropriate. Grey literature is considered and sources are identified where appropriate. Boolean operators are applied correctly. All elements of search syntax (eg truncation, field codes, proximity operators) are used consistently, appropriately, and correctly. Both subject headings and keywords are used in the search; if one is dominating the search it is justifiable. Exploding function is used appropriately; non-use is justifable. All relevant limits are identified and applied correctly.

0.04 pts

DISTINCTION

Formulates a relevant, clear, and focused research question. There is an adequate number of searchable concepts and most are correctly identified. Synonyms are adequate in number and are grouped correctly. Most relevant and appropriate databases selected. Boolean operators are applied correctly. Most elements of search syntax (eg truncation, field codes, proximity operators) are used consistently, appropriately, and correctly. Both subject headings and keywords are used in the search; if one is dominating the search it is justifiable. Exploding function is used appropriately; non-use is justifiable. Most relevant limits are identified and applied correctly.

0.03 pts

CREDIT

Formulates a relevant, clear, and focused research question. There is an adequate number of searchable concepts and some are correctly identified. Some synonyms are identified and are grouped correctly. Some relevant and appropriate databases selected. Grey literature is not addressed (if relevant to review type). Boolean operators are applied correctly. Some elements of search syntax (eg truncation, field codes, proximity operators) are used consistently, appropriately, and correctly. Only subject headings or keywords are used in the search; if both used, one is dominating the search unjustifiably. Exploding function is either not used or used inappropriately. Some relevant limits are identified and applied correctly.

0.02 pts

PASS

Formulates a relevant research question but is unfocused. There is an inadequate number of searchable concepts and few are correctly identified. Few synonyms are identified and are grouped incorrectly. Few relevant and appropriate databases selected. Grey literature is not addressed (if relevant to review type). Boolean operators are applied incorrectly. Few elements of search syntax (eg truncation, field codes, proximity operators) are used consistently, appropriately, and correctly. Only subject headings or keywords are used in the search; if both used, one is dominating the search unjustifiably. Exploding function is either not used or used inappropriately. Few relevant limits are identified and applied correctly.

0.01 pts

FAIL

Research question is missing or is irrelevant. Searchable concepts are not identified correctly and are inadequate in number. No synonyms are identified. Selected databases are limited in number and inappropriate. Grey literature is not addressed (if relevant to review type). Boolean operators are applied incorrectly. Search syntax is used inconsistently and mostly incorrectly. Only subject headings or keywords are used. If subject headings are used, most important/obvious ones ae missing. Exploding function is not addressed. No relevant limits are identified and/or applied correctly.
