Context:
The scientific integrity and the credibility of the data from a study depends significantly on
the study design.
This assignment covers learning related to Epidemiological Study Designs and Measures of
Association used in different primary research study designs. Measures of association are
used to compare an association between exposure and health outcome and/or can be used
to compare two or more populations. Note that evidence of an association does not imply
that the relationship is causal, the association can be artifactual or non-causal as well.

PUBH6005: Epidemiology Assignment
By prescribing this assessment, students are able to reflect on their understanding of study
design, sampling, statistical analysis, measures of association and generalizability.

Instructions:
This assignment has two parts. PART 1 involves reading two primary research articles, and applying what
you have learned about epidemiological study designs and measures of association to answer a series of
short answer questions. PART 2 requires you to consider several health issues and decide
the most appropriate study design for investigating that health issue. In addition, you will discuss the
advantages, disadvantages and ethics of each study design in the given question.

PART 1:
You are required to read two different research articles provided to you and accessed in
Blackboard in the Assessment 2 folder.
Read both the articles provided to you and using your epidemiology knowledge and skills respond
to the five (5) short answer questions as outlined below:

  • Describe the aim/objective of the study given in each of the two research articles (5 marks)
  • Describe the study participants in each of the research papers in terms of their geographical location,
inclusion and exclusion criteria ( 15 marks)
  • Describe how the disease (health outcome) was assessed in both the research papers. (10 marks)
  • Describe how the exposure was assessed in both the research papers. Name
the statistical analysis used in each of the study’s to assess the relationship between exposure
    and outcome (15 marks)
  • Choose any one study and describe the extent the results of that study can be generalized to other/
    or your population(s) (5 marks)

PART 2
You will be provided with five brief case studies, also accessed in Blackboard in the
Assessment 2 folder. For each case study you will answer the following three (3)
questions as outlined below:

  • Identify the most appropriate study design to explore each health issue and give
justification for your chosen study design
  • Discuss two (2) advantages and two disadvantages for your chosen study design
  • Identify two (2) ethical considerations for your chosen study design
You may support your appropriate study design with a referenced example of a primary
    research study.

Formatting guidelines

  • A word document must be used to write your assessment
  • Identify your learning facilitator’s name on your assessment coversheet
  • Include the title and give the in-text citation of the paper in part 1 when
you give answers for Q 1-5
