Guidelines
Record video case presentation based on pre scenario:
Use the relevant scenario based on your area of practice/discipline (i.e., Mental health nursing)
- Read and identify the needs of the individual in scenario within your role as a nurse/student nurse Identify evidence-based interventions for meeting the identified needs of the individual in scenario Formulate/develop a case presentation slide to demonstrate your understanding of the need and how these needs will be met.
- Video record a 15 mins presentation of the developed slid
No of slides
For your presentation use no more than 12 slides for the main body of the presentation
- Use up to 2 slides only for your references.
- Total number of slides = 14
Case formulation
Cover and content pages
- A brief background of the individual based on the information presented in your field specific case scenario Issues of capacity and consent will need to be discussed
- Discussion about how the student will work in a personcentred way with the individual during this process
- Identified needs of the individual
- Select 3-5 of the needs, of which one is to be related to the risk of self-harm, suicide or abuse, discuss how these needs could be met through evidence-based interventions (rational for use of intervention)
- Identify who is responsible for each intervention. Think about the role of the nurse/student nurse, and other professionals and agencies within this process
- Use a range of relevant references using the Harvard Referencing system.
- A Harvard style reference list of all cited references
Cover stud
On this opening page of your oral presentation, you will also introduce yourself verbally
COVER SLIDE This should state the following:
* Programme of study
* Module Code and Title
* Module leaders name/s
*Title of assignment
*Word count (if applicable to assignment) *Your student ID number
This oral presentation template is a guide to ensure you cover all elements of the presentation so you can illustrate it and use interesting backgrounds to make it visually appealing
Contents page:
This should set out / explain what your presentation will cover.
- You could present it like the contents page of a book.
- You can present this in bullet points to make it easy to read.
- Or maybe you can think of a more creative way? As long as it is clear, its fine
Back ground
This page should contain information about your patient scenario but just key points , not a long, drawn-out essay! L
- Dont read from the slide. Instead make separate notes for you to refer to, so you can discuss each point in turn, when you record the presentation
Consider how you can make the information on this page, more visually interesting? Images? Picture etc? Noone wants to read a full page of text. Thats hard work to read as well as listen to you, AND it is more like an essay. Consider the kinds of presentations you enjoy most, as a student? What is it that makes it fun?
Personcentered care
Discuss what this means in relation to your field of practice (e.g. Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Childrens Nursing, Learning Disabilities, etc)
- Explain how person centred care is involved in the process, in relation to your patient scenario
- Support your discussion with evidence
- Again, dont read from the slide. Make bullet points and discuss each one in turn
Relate this to YOUR field of practice. For example, if you are training to be a Nurse, then you dont want to be referring to codes and policies ..Keep it relevant
consent
Discuss what consent means in relation to your field of practice (e.g. Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Childrens Nursing, Learning Disabilities, etc).
- How do you relate this to your patient scenario?
- Again, dont read from the slide. Make bullet points and discuss each one in turn
Mental capacity
Discuss what mental capacity means in relation to your field of practice (e.g Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Childrens Nursing, Learning Disabilities, etc )
- How do you determine if your patient has mental capacity (in your patient scenario)?
- Support your discussion with evidence
- Again, dont read from the slide. Make bullet points and discuss each one in turn
Dont forget the Mental Capacity Act! and reference it!
Identifying needs- just a guide
Needs/Problems = Nursing Diagnosis (Clinical judgement). Can be Actual/noticeable problems OR Potential/risk ? Actual Needs/Problems - 3 things to consider:
- The defining characteristic (symptoms)= Verbalised by patient
- The related factor (what caused the problem)= Related to inflammation of the muscles in the joint 3. Nursing Diagnosis Problem statement= Acute Pain ? Potential Needs/Problems /Risk 2 things to consider
- the risk factors (symptom or signs) = Related to weakness of the muscle
- Risk diagnostic label (potential risk) = Risk of fall
Activity
Give an example of a need from your field specific scenario
Patient needs
Highlight ALL the identified needs from the scenario. Then highlight a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 healthcare needs that you will focus on in detail in the next slides. Be specific about these. Examples: - Eating and Drinking (Obesity) - Drug Addiction - Personal Hygiene (Personal neglect) - Breathlessness Depression.
One need MUST be about either self-harm, suicide or abuse.
Identify the healthcare needs carefully. Remember: Causes of a healthcare needs are not always the needs, but can be addressed as part of the intervention Unemployment may be a cause for depression Need = Depression
Intervention and responsibility
Actions to be carried to address specific need. Be specific , DONT use abbreviations
- Type of action: Independent (action by the nurse), Dependent (action by other professionals), Collaborative ( patient/nurse/professional)
- What the action will do: (Improve, eliminate, increase , reduce, prevent)
- Who is responsible: Specific nurse associate/Nurse/Healthcare professional/Service
- Rationale for the action: What the action will achieve (benefit of using) Nursing Diagnosis Handbook (Download)
Interventions & Responsibility
One slides for each need with interventions
- Needs MUST include at least one of self-harm, suicide, or abuse.
- MSc Students- Critically analyse the interventions proposed (strength and weaknesses/challenges)
Patient need no1
A minimum of 2 interventions per need
For each identified need, discuss this need and the interventions required to address each need for your patient scenario (evidence of analysis)
- Ensure each point you make is supported with evidence
- Specify who is responsible for each intervention, including other professionals involved.
- Again, bullet point and then discuss around each point in your presentation.
- Consider imagery to make your presentation more visually interesting.
Patient need no 2
A minimum of 2 interventions per need
For each identified need, discuss this need and the interventions required to address each need for your patient scenario (demonstrate analysis)
- Ensure each point you make is supported with evidence.
- Specify who is responsible for each intervention, including other professionals involved.
- Again, bullet point and then discuss around each point in your presentation.
- Consider imagery to make your presentation more visually interesting.
Patient need no 3
A minimum of 2 interventions per need
For each identified need, discuss this need and the intervention required to address each need for your patient scenario (demonstrating analysis)
- Ensure each point you make is supported with evidence.
- Specify who is responsible for each intervention, including other professionals involved
- Again, bullet point and then discuss around each point in your presentation.
- Consider imagery to make your presentation more visually interesting.
Summary / conclusion
No new information here.
- Just briefly summarise the key points and draw your presentation to a close

Your assessment brief: Guidance:
The coursework assessment for this Level 5 module will be completed through 15 minutes recorded video presentation based on a pre-determined case scenario (100%). Using the relevant field specific case scenario (Mental Health, Learning Disability, Adult, Child Nursing), students will record a 15-minute PowerPoint case presentation which identifies the need of the individual and how these can be met, considering issues of capacity & consent and person-centered care.
The power point will consist of no more than 12 slides and students will include the following:
- A brief background of the individual based on the information presented in the selected pre-determined case scenario
- Issues of capacity and consent will need to be discussed
- Discussion about how the student will work in a person-centred way with the individual during this process The identification of the needs of the individual
- Selecting 3-5 of the needs, of which one is to be related to the risk of self-harm, suicide or abuse, students will discuss how these needs could be met through evidence-based interventions, justifying the involvement of other professionals and their role within this.
- Slides will need to be underpinned by a range of relevant references using the Harvard Referencing system. 1 | P a g e
- A Harvard style reference list of all cited references Presentation slide preparation guide: A. Beginning: Focus on setting the scene for the work - Present a cover slide: Highlighting work title, Module code and title, Personal tutor, student ID, assignment title (A case presentation for name of patient) - Content slide- Outlining what presentation will cover - Background slide- Presenting patients brief clinical information
- Middle: Focus on covering the main points of the work with evidence - Person centered care, consent, and capacity slide(s): Detailing how person-centered care, consent and capacity was involved in the process (both these aspects MUST be included in the presentation) - Patient needs slide: Highlighting the identified needs from scenario - Slides for each need with interventions: Discussing interventions for each identified needs (Minimum of 3 needs: maximum 5 needs) with rational, evidence(s), and specifying who is responsible for each intervention, including other professionals involved Students MUST include one need about either self-harm, suicide, or abuse.
- End: - Provide an overall conclusion of their presentation.
- Reference list - A reference list of all sources cited in the presentation (Alphabetically arranged) - Ensure that references adhere to Harvard Referencing Style - Ensure references are recent and relevant to interventions and other relevant areas The presentation and recording could be completed via Office 365 PowerPoint (see attached guide) or via Teams. The final recording should be downloaded as an MP4 file and uploaded to Turnitin. Formative assessments: Students will be supported towards the summative assessment through assignment support sessions and formative assessments and activities/workshop on holistic care planning.
