Reflective Analysis of Project Management Practices: Identifying Opportunities for Improvement
Introduction
This assignment requires you to use the acquired knowledge, skills and insights from attending the course to critically reflect on your experience of
working on a project. This critical reflection should allow you to identify opportunities to improve the project management practices in future project
work.
Thus the assignment requires you to examine a past project of your choice and to critically evaluate the project management practices that you
observed. Having done this, you need to then identify areas for improvement
Suggested Structure
Project Overview
- This should be a short introduction that explains the nature of the project and the company (you are permitted to anonymise the company name if
necessary for reasons of confidentiality - e.g. 'a global sports-wear brand, a large software house, etc.).
Project Outcome
- Again, this section needs to be brief and should explain whether there were variances between the planned and actual project outcomes. If the
project was not delivered before you left the company, then comment on the progress to date. This analysis of variance could be around the triple
constraint (time, cost, quality) or other aspects of success.
Analysis and Recommendations
Analysis and Recommendations
- Identify 2-4 issues from the project to discuss in depth. These issues should follow on logically from the outcome discussed above.
Tip: using root-cause analysis tools (e.g. Why? Why? Analysis) to derive analytical insights. - For each of the issues which you have identified you should provide:
• A description of the nature of issue and how it impacted the project
• An analysis of why the issue occurred: use a framework (a theory or idea from the course) to situate your understanding of the issue.
• One (or more) improvement recommendations based on this analysis
Summary Conclusions
- A short (half page) summary of the lessons learned that reflects on whether the recommendations are implementable - for example are there
foreseeable barriers to implementation, and if so how could they be overcome.
