Research Appraisal And The Role Of EBP Assignment
- Country :
Australia
This assignment is all about research appraisal and the role of EBP in practice.
Appraising research
You are trying to do a few things. Create a reasoned discussion, draw a conclusion, apply the language of appraisal (quality assure the process) and evidence your ideas (this is where wider reading comes in).
This should be possible by undertaking the following-
- Define / explain an idea or thought
- Lok at strengths and weaknesses – alternatives if available.
- Contextualize – which is the best thing to do here – why?
For both studies questions you might ask include:
- What was their aim?
- What approach did they take?
- Were alternatives available?
- Was this the right or most valid approach to take? Why?
- Who were their participants?
- How did they get their sample? Has this approach got a name? Describe it - sharing both strengths and weaknesses
- How many did they look at? Is this enough? How would the researcher know? Does size matter?
- What method or data collecting tool was used?
- What are the benefits and disadvantages of this approach?
- How were the results analyzed?
- What are the benefits and disadvantages of this approach?
- Were ethical considerations made? Tell me about them? Were they good enough?
- What were the results? Do they answer the question set? If not, why not?
- Overall is the research testable? Plausible? Useful?
You can’t possibly cover all of the above so be selective - focus on two or three key themes in each.
Look at using the language of appraisal ROVER for quantitative research – credibility etc for qualitative. Consider why the two approaches need to be appraised in different ways.
Now tell me about the impact on your work.
Here you are applying what we have learnt together in class to your role in practice.
We need to understand the rationale for your choice of research and that you understand what EBP is..what is it? Why use it? Who says so?
You might consider here:
How you will disseminate your learning – remember that’s what EBP is all about: the practical application of research into patient care – you are the conduit. Are their barriers to this? Is research worth doing even if it raises awareness of something / confirms best practice?
The impact of ethics on research with children
The research hierarchy
Do we need both approaches to provide holistic care?
Before submission, check all LO’s are met by asking yourself:
Have I evaluated? –
said what is good / bad about the research design? Be selective here pick the bits you can build an argument around. Consider strengths, weaknesses, and alternatives – critique rather than describe.
Have I assessed for quality using the language of appraisal?
You need to ROVER quantitative research… how did they make their research more reliable / objective / representative - look at numbers, blinding, selection of sample etc., here. For qualitative research you need to ask how they met the needs of their research being credible, confirm-able etc – see guidance on BB
Have I considered my role in EBP?
I hope this helps – nearly there now
