Paper Guidelines and Grading Criteria
Description of the Assignment
Each student will complete a formal APA paper of 5-6 pages that examines the role of the clinical nurse specialist as an advanced practice nurse. See description and grading criteria for required elements and organization of the paper.
1. Define advanced practice nurse (APN). Distinguish the APN from other levels of nursing in terms of education, certification, licensure, and practice. Summarize the seven competencies for the APN.
2. Compare and contrast the practice focus, scope of practice, and practice concerns of the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) to the other three APN roles: nurse practitioner (NP), certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).
3. Analyze the value and contributions of the CNS to improvement of patient outcomes, nursing practice, and health care. Discuss future implications for the CNS role and practice.
4. Use a minimum of three (3) scholarly, peer-reviewed sources to support the discussion and analysis.
Paper Guidelines
This is a formal APA paper, not an opinion paper. Include the APA title page (APA section 2.3, p. 30-31), page numbers (APA section 2,18, p. 44), text (APA section 2.11, p. 39), and reference pages (APA section 2.12, p. 39-40). Do not submit an abstract.
Use good organization in writing the paper. Include a good introduction and conclusion. Use the outline in the grading tool to organize the text of the paper. Use topic headings to structure your paper and organize the required content (Sample Student Paper, APA Manual, pp. 47-49; 61-67).
Format the paper according to APA guidelines. Use double line spacing between headings and paragraphs. Do not use extra line spacing between headings and paragraphs. Use 12-point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, in Word format.
The content of the paper should be covered in 5-6 pages. Do not submit more than 6 pages of content (not counting the title page and reference pages).
Use APA guidelines for referencing sources in the paper. Review guidelines for paraphrases and quotations (APA, p. 268-278). Do not use direct quotes unless meaning will be lost with paraphrasing. Paraphrase and document the source used according to APA.
Only use scholarly and professional sources of information in preparing the paper. Only use weblinks that are accessible to the instructor. For all references, especially a weblink, the instructor must be able to access it without any special login information. Do not use sources that are not dated, anonymous, or do not have authors.
Unacceptable references include:
Wikipedia or other online dictionaries
Blogs
Nursing-theory.org or currentnursing.com
No date (n.d.) or no author references
PowerPoints, SlideShare, lectures or personal communications
