Curriculum Mode: Portfolio

This assessment task comprises THREE parts

Written task based on a hypothetical scenario

Written self-reflection on the development of your communication skills.

Creation of an infographic

PART I:

Written evidence-based brief (1,000 words)

BACKGROUND SCENARIO: You work for an organization who employs [YOUR SPECIFIC PROFESSION]. Your organization could be a private practice, a school, a government health district, a non-government organization, or business. In a review of the performance of the organization, communication (verbal, non-verbal, and written) was identified as an area needing improvement, including communication within teams, communication with clients/patients/students, and communication with the general public. Poor communication has resulted in several poor client/patient/student outcomes. As part of the performance review, several concerns related to communication were identified, and have been divided into two areas, as noted in the table below.

Communication issues within the organization

(select any ONE of the following)

Meetings: Negative attitudes of staff and unresolved conflicts during team meetings.

Meetings: Less experienced staff not confident to speak up in meetings and voice concerns about risks to patient/client/student safety that they have identified.

Staff feeling disheartened and frustrated that team members are not referring on clients/patients appropriate for their particular profession.

Some staff are unclear about who is responsible for particular tasks, and who is responsible for particular clients/patients/students, assuming someone else is responsible.

Extensive delays and errors in paperwork such as client/patient reports and progress notes, leading to frustration among team members about poor communication about patients/clients/students.

Communication issues with clients/patients/students/consumers*

and the general public.

(select any ONE of the following)

Issues relevant to students from all disciplines

People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds have been dissatisfied with the service because of concerns that theyre not understood and that their culture is not respected.

Approximately 20% of clients/patients are often failing to attend their appointments or turning up late for a 30-minute appointment.

Complaints that the quality of telehealth appointments has been poor, and communication during these appointments has been challenging.

Patients/clients/students with communication impairments reporting that staff have dismissed, ignored, or misunderstood their concerns.

Clients/patients/consumers not following through with a prescribed program because of concerns about how the program was communicated (e.g., the program was reported to be either too difficult to follow, too difficult to remember, too complicated for the client/patient/consumer, or seemed inappropriate for their age.)

Poor and unfriendly signage, and information clutter around and within the organization, making patients/clients/students frustrated and often needing to ask for information, help to find staff, and find specific venues.

Information on the organizations website and social media platforms are out-of-date, misleading, difficulty to navigate, and dont provide adequate information about the professionals involved in the organization, and services offered.

Issues particularly relevant to allied health, health services, and HP students

Three allegations of poor communication between health professionals and patients/clients/ have been associated with serious adverse outcomes.

A patient complained that the treatment provided did not meet their expectation, because the staff member claimed to be able to treat a particular health condition but that the treatment didnt work. (In defense, the staff member noted not promising to cure the condition but to improve the patients quality of life.)

Patient-reported experience measures (PREMS) for the organization have been below-average in the domain of interpersonal communication.

Issues particularly relevant to HPE and allied health working in a school setting

Parents have reported concerns that communication with parents during parent-teacher interviews, phone calls, and emails to be unclear and not consistent with what students have reported.

Families of children with intellectual disabilities have complained that their children are being left out during the new gynmastics program at the school, because the children are having difficulty following instructions.

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder have complained that their children are being left out of Teams sport.

Write an evidence-based brief addressing TWO communication issues listed in the above able. Of the TWO, you need to select ONE issue within the organization, and ONE issue with patients/clients/students/consumers that use your organization. Your brief for each communication issue needs to address:

What are the main factors likely to underlie the communication issue?

What are the consequences if the communication issue is not addressed?

Proposed solution to address the communication issue

The word limit for Part One is 1000 words, equivalent to approximately 500 words per communication issue. You can include images (e.g., graphs, figures, images) to supplement your response for each issue. As part of your written response, you are expected to consider and refer to evidence-based literature for points #1, #2, and #3. The literature needs to come from books, book chapters, peer reviewed journal articles, and reputable websites for organizations (not generic websites such as Wikipedia). Information topics covered in this unit of study (listed below), will assist you in developing your thinking about the communication issues, and preparation of your response to the communication issues.

What should the infographic about? Create an infographic on a specific health condition or issue managed by your profession. For example, how does [YOUR PROFESSION] work with people who have a condition such as motor neuron disease, Parkinsons disease, multiple sclerosis. diabetes, obesity, anxiety, depression, osteoarthritis, attention deficit disorder, autism, cancer, stroke, dementia, a particular genetic syndrome, vocal nodules, stuttering, aphasia, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, asthma, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hearing loss, vertigo, traumatic brain injury, a particular type of fracture, concussion, schizophrenia, carpal tunnel syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, vertigo .). Find a health condition that you dont know much about and learn how your profession works with people who have that condition.

What type of information should be on the infographic?Your infographic could be a fact sheet, a checklist, and/or practical ideas for addressing the health condition. Include information about how your profession works with people who have that condition. You also need to include your name and indicate which references have been used to support any facts. Scott et al., (2017) provide an helpful example of how references can be included on an infographic. (Scott, H., Fawkner, S., Oliver, C. W., & Murray, A. (2017). How to make an engaging infographic?British Journal of Sports Medicine, 51(16), 1183.https://doi.org/10.1136/bjsports-2016-097023)

Who is the target audience for the infographic? The audience is the general public (as opposed to other health professionals). For instance, it could be placed in a visible public place for people to view (e.g., GP waiting room wall, the noticeboard of an aged-care facility, a school newsletter, a magazine). .

What should it look like?Make your infographic visually appealing, easy to understand, and informative. Ensure that any graphics/images that you use are appropriate to your topic. You could create graphs / figures and/or use readily available images (as long as they do not breach copyright). For example, use images in the public domain, images with a creative commons license (e.g., seehttps://pixabay.com/), or images that are available to use within online infographics programs.

Format and preparation for submission:

Prepare Part I (evidence-based brief), Part II (self-reflection) and your Reference list as a word document with 2.5cm margins, double-spaced text using 12-point font. You can use headings and sub-headings within each part. Headings and references are not counted in the word count. Convert your word.doc into a PDF document.

Prepare your infographic as a .doc or ppt or JPG pr PNG (image) then convert to a PDF (e.g.,https://www.adobe.com/au/acrobat/online/jpg-to-pdf.html)

Merge the PDFs for Parts I, II, and III together in that order (e.g.,https://www.pdf2go.com/merge-pdf) and submit via Turnitin.
