Social Determinants of Health
Social Determinants of Health
Assignment Guidance
The assignment for the module on Social Determinants of Health is to create an infographic: a graphic/visual representation of information.
Infographics are a way of presenting complex and dense content to support processing, learning, and future recognition and recollection (Dunlap & Lowenthal, 2016). They are increasingly used in policy and practice including to support identification of health disparities driven by social determinants (Otten et al., 2015). Infographics can easily communicate data, patterns and trends clearly and concisely. See page 5 of this document for an example of an infographic.
You should select one social determinant of interest to you (e.g. housing, nutrition, education etc). The aim of the assignment is to demonstrate knowledge and critical analysis of how contextual, interpersonal and systemic factors contribute to health inequalities and inequities within and between countries.
Requirements: Create an eye-catching, colorful, neat infographic to communicate information. This should contain a minimum of:
1) a main title for the infographic;
2) eye catching section headings;
3) a minimum of 3 colours;
4) a minimum of 1 graph/chart and graphic e.g. shapes, figures, representations of people/patients or health setting;
5) a total of 10 information points on the infographic;
6) an accompanying document of up to 1,000 words (+ or 200 words) summarizing the information that the infographic strives to convey. In this document you should provide a justification for the selection of the social determinant and consider the implications for public health in various country contexts regarding more effective health promotion programs and policies that could be developed and implemented based on greater understanding of the factors conveyed in the infographic.
Deadline: 10th December (but can be handed in at any time up to this deadline)
Format: Infographic and accompanying 1,000 word document (+ or 200 words).

Infographic generally lacks visual appeal and is text-heavy with little or no visuals and/or exhibit an overuse of color or animations. Media, (e.g., images), if used, are rarely cited on each slide. No theme is evident and the infopraphic appears disjointed rather than unified and/or frequent errors (grammar, punctuation, spelling, formatting, etc.).
