Context

This subject primarily focuses on the principles and practice of public health and the impact of social determinants of health on population health outcomes. To improve the health outcomes of the specific population group. Public health practitioners need to be self-aware by regularly reflecting on the knowledge they learned, their experiences, and feedback from their peers.

This learning reflective journal assessment has been designed to develop your cognitive and critical thinking skills, which are essential for a career in public health. The assessment allows you to broaden your understanding of each topic through engaging in academic discourse while developing your skills to engage in formal discussions with your peers. It allows you to develop your ability to reflect on the learning content and discuss and share ideas in a professional manner.

Task Summary

To complete this assignment, you must maintain a weekly journal of your learning experience in the first four weeks of the subject. By the end of week four, you will write a learning reflective journal, consolidating the knowledge learned of the principles of public health. In week 12 you will participate in a 3-minutes presentation to demonstrate the application of potential solutions to health outcomes based on the principles of public health and the knowledge learned from week 5 to 11.

Assessment 1 consists of two milestones:

  1. Milestone1: Learning reflective journal (500 words)
  2. Milestone2: 3-minute presentation in class

Instructions

During the first four weeks of this subject, you will learn about the essential principles of public health. You will need to keep a personal learning journal of the content learned using your own words. For milestone 1 you are required to submit a 500-words learning reflective journal where you will combine your learning experience with relevant evidence. Based on a specific population affected by a negative health outcome provided by your learning facilitator, you will critical analysis and applying principles and concepts of public health into practice. To develop this reflective journal, you will support your knowledge with academic literature, by providing at least three (3) academic valid references.

For milestone 2, you will present a potential strategy to target a specific determinant of health affecting the same population of milestone 1 and based on the key principles of public health. The presentation will be individual and will have a duration of 3 minutes (timed). You can use a maximum of 4 slides, including the reference slide.

Please follow the steps below to develop this assessment.

  1. Criticallyreview the concepts and principles discussed in weeks 1 to 4 (e.g. equity, equality, social inclusion, social capital, empowerment, accessibility, human rights protection and resilience).
  2. Usecritical thinking skills to reflect your opinion/analysis/perspectives on the given topics/questions.
  3. Seekfurther information from authoritative textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, government reports or academic online sources.
  4. Integrateknowledge/information with your critical thinking to form a reflective learning journal.
  5. Updateassessment 1 progression each week
