Discuss what you intend to cover within the assignment with reference to the LOs describe how you intend to meet them (tell us what you will cover, how your discussion will related to the LOs and why the points are relevant for sw)<!-- [if !supportLists]-->Main body there are 4 LOs so you will want to spend approx. 500 words on each LO.
<!-- [if !supportLists]-->You must cover each in order to pass the assignment.
<!-- [if !supportLists]-->Below are ideas which you might find helpful when considering the LOs
What do you think is meant by social justice? In what ways does social justice relate to Daniel/ Katie/ others in the film You may want to think about notions of deserving/ undeserving poor and how this has changed or not over history. Some further pointers might be: What parallels can you identify in the way Daniel was treated by the benefits system and the 1601 Poor law, and 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act? You may wish to consider how Daniel was deemed fit to work after the Work Capability Assessment and denied Employment and Support Allowance. How do you think this relates to the notions of deserving and undeserving poor? Likewise, consider Katie and how she was sanctioned for arriving late to her job center appointment. How does this reflect Poor Law values? |
What does a sociological imagination mean? How would this this support you to understand Katie/ Daniel/ other character? If you didnt have a sociological imagination what would be the dangers? (e.g. blaming them) How does this link to social work values and ethics? You will want to relate your discussion to consensus theory (e.g. functionalism) and conflict theories (e.g. Marxism or feminist theories) |
How would you make sense of Daniels predicament from a social democrat perspective? Now consider the same question but from a neo-liberal perspective. How do the two compare? You may wish to consider the incident where Daniel refuses a job because his doctor will not allow him to work yet. How would the two ideologies make sense of this? Or you might wish to consider the reasons which led Katie to move away from her family/ friends/ networks |
You might wish to consider conflict theories here (if not already covered for LO2) and symbolic interactionism/ labelling theories and how they link to the characters, for example: How might feminist approaches make sense of Katie being forced into prostitution? How might feminist approach understand Daniels reluctance to accept support? How might a Marxist perspective make sense of Daniels situation/ his power within society? How might Marxist theories on the family/ education apply to Katie and her children? What labels might have been applied to Daniel/ Katie and how might this create divisions and impact their own feelings of self and behaviours? |
