ASSIGNMENT TASK
Each student is to undertake research into an innovative building material that can be used for a particular element within a building.
The elements are:
- Façade cladding
- Structure
- Roof cladding
- Internal finish
- Services
This research should be carried out using information obtained from:
- Manufacturers
- Suppliers
- Industry organizations
Students are to write a report of 1500 words and also prepare an A2-size poster that presents the key findings of their research. This poster will be used to support peer discussions that will occur during the seminar on the day of submission.
The following list is indicative of content but you may include additional content (or less) as required:
- Purpose and use of material
- Benefits and limitations – recommendation for best practice
- Behaviour
- Cost
- Maintenance
- Innovative features
- Global use
- Comparison with similar materials
The brief report based on the peer discussion must be prepared on the day of the poster presentation. The template for the brief report will be provided on the day of the poster presentation. More information is provided in the Format of Assignment section.

Your chosen material will influence your content. For instance, in some cases you may find it helpful to discuss changes and improvements to your material over time while for another material this may not be relevant. Remember that the information you obtain from a manufacturer may be biased which is why it is important to use more than one source.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this research is for you to think critically about the choices you may have regarding building materials. As well, this information will provide the starting point for success in Assignment 2. Further to this, the range of materials will be used for the Value Management exercise as part of Assignment 3. Integration of information is a necessity when working in the construction industry and the assignments are designed for you to practice this skill.
