Activity One Stress for Success
Purpose: what is the purpose and how does it relate to body image>?
Ask participants to stand and form circles of about five to eight people. Give each group one stress ball to begin. Have the first person throw a ball to someone else and remember who they threw it to since they will be asked to remember and continue the same pattern. If there is only one group, you can be part of the group, but if there is more than one, make sure you are not in the mix, since you will need to move around between groups. Each person throws the ball to someone who has not yet had the ball. The last person sends it back to the original person who keeps the ball rolling a little faster then next time. (Do not have them throw to the same person twice until all members have gotten it first.) Once they have the pattern down, introduce another ballthen another and then another. Balls drop, roll, etc., but urge them to pick them up and continue. With five or six balls going at a time, it becomes quite a circus with a lot of laughing!
Facilitators note:
This activity may be conducted inside or outside. If possible, allow participants to decide where they would like to conduct the activity, if weather permits.
Ask participants to spread out around the room as this activity is highly personal.
Participants may like to stay where they are seated, choose to sit on the floor or sit at a table.
Note again that if the activity becomes too difficult or confronting they are free to leave the room and go to their safe place. Activity Two- Straw Activity
Purpose: : what is the purpose and how does it relate to body image?
Take a straw and place it horizontally on the table. Now hold both the ends firmly and start twisting them in such a manner that they overlap each other and form an air bubble at the center. Now ask a volunteer to step forward and burst the straw air bubble with a thumb or finger (as if hitting the stricker on the carrom board). The bubble with burst and will create a lot of noise.
Facilitator Note:
This is not an exhaustive list, if participants think of others that are suitable for the environment and the equipment is available, they should be encouraged to try that approach.
Again, inform participants that if the activity becomes too difficult or confronting they are free to leave the room and go to their safe place.
Throughout the activity check in with each participant to ensure that they are ok.
Bring everyone back to the circle after 20 minutes with the expressive art they have created.
Ask participants to go around the room and state what narrative approach they used and why. 20 mins. Stickers
Carrom board
Activity Three - Consider the Consequences
Purpose: : what is the purpose and how does it relate to body image?
One interesting thing about stress is that in 90% of cases there isnt anything to stress you up, but the very thought gives stress. And its all cooked up stories in our own minds.
Facilitator Note:
Ask participants to think about something that gives them stress.
Ask them to think about various consequences and reactions that might take place.
They keep thinking about the same for approximately 5 minutes.
You may give them directions to intensify the thought.
All of a sudden SAY Stop thinking.
Ask them how do they feel.
Ask- has anything of that yet happened?
When will the break be?
What about the wrapping up the session
Is there any homework? 10 mins Circle of chairs
Participant workbook
Papers and pens
Emotion paper showing the type of moods.
I liked the purpose and aims but I dont think the content meets that purpose, it seems to be just three activities which would be quite exhausting and disjointed for the participants and Im not seeing how they relate to body image. The exercises are quite generic around stress management rather than specific to the aims and objectives
I would prefer a powerpoint presentation giving information about body image, social media ect (I think there is so much information about this tiopic and this session could be extremely informative and thought provoking)
Then perhaps an exercise and/discussion.
Perhaps making a collage together cutting out images in magazines or something !
I think this is an important topic and on that needs to be considered more
