Roadaccidentsinvolvingbicycles

1Taskdefinition

In order to be able to take targeted measures to increase road safety, it is necessary to have a good knowledge of the accident situation. The federal and state statistical offices provide an interactive web application at https://unfallatlas.statistikportal.de which can be used to obtain an initial overview. The underlying raw data is also linked from this page. As part of this study, this data on road accidents isbe statistically analysed, with a particular focus on the Ruhr region and accidents involving bicycles. An exemplary study for the city of Berlin can be found in (Lakes, 2017).

The following points are to be understood as suggestions for the investigations to be carried out:

  1. Graphically depict the accident situation in Germany on a
  2. Create a comparable presentation for the Ruhr area or for
  3. Evaluate the frequency of accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians in the Ruhr region in a nationwide comparison. Are there significant differences within the Ruhr region?
  4. Analyse how accidents develop over the time of day and over theOf particular interest is the question of whether the ERA (Recommendations for Cycling Facilities) data on cycling traffic volumes correlate with the accident figures1.
  5. Evaluate whether cycling accidents occur more frequently in the dark or in

1Generalisable daily, weekly and annual cycle traffic curves are currently still the subject of research. Insofar as no annual hydrographbe derived from surveys in the planning area, the following monthly indices can be used for the time being, taking into account the influence of the weather (annual average= 1.0): January 0.6, February 0.6, March 0.8, April 1.0, May 1.1, June 1.4, July 1.4, Au-

gust1.3,September 1.4,October 1.0,November 0.8,December 0.6.

Note:The above points are intended as a guideline for processing. If you work on these points using the methods covered in the lecture, you can achieve a good grade. To achieve a very good grade, your research must have an independent component. can do this by addressing questions in your work that are not mentioned above. You can also work independently on statistical methods or forms of visualisation that were not covered in the lecture.

2Examinationperformance

TheexaminationfortheMathematicsBmodulecomprises

  • a written elaboration in the form of a short scientific paper or a presentation,
  • a submission discussion with questions about the mathematical relationships. Please note the following information.

Processing

The coursework can be completed individually or in groups of two students. Use the programming language R for the statistical analyses.

Writtenelaboration

The written version of the student research project should comprise approx. 15 pages. The paper should be based on a typical scientific article in the respective discipline. Possible structure:

  • Describe the problem and the associated statistical
  • Present the methods you used analyse the
  • Prepare the results of the
  • Summarise the most important findings from the study and derive any recommendations for action.

ThepapercanbewritteninR-Markdown(recommended)oranothersuitableprogramme. A short introduction to creating scientific documents in R-Markdown can be found on Moodle.

Presentation

In a presentation of approx. 15 minutes, the task, the methods used and the most important results are to be presented in a lecture. The slides for the presentation can be created on the basis of the slides from the lecture using R-Markdown or other suitable software.

Colloquium

Aspartofthecolloquium, itischeckedwhetherthestudent'sworkonthedissertationwas carried out independently and what part the participants played in writing the dissertation. In particular, reference is made to the mathematical foundations of the methods used and in general to the content of the lecture. The interview takes place individually.

Dates

The latest submission deadline for the written paper is6 April 2025. The written documentation must be uploaded to Moodle as a PDF document and the associated R source code by the submission deadline. Submission in printed form, by e-mail or on a data carrier is not required. The lectures and colloquia will take place in April 2025, the dates will be announced in good time.
