OVERVIEW

This assignment is designed to give students the opportunity to focus on some of the underpinning aspects of a critical social work approach to crises, trauma and addiction and to apply to relevant scenarios.

EXPECTATIONS REGARDING USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLEIGENCE AND CHAT GPT

WHAT YOU WILL DO

You will write an essay using ideas from or relevant to critical social work, choosing one of the following four scenarios:

SCENARIO 1: The disaster of climate change and working with climate refugees

Climate change has challenged the notion of natural disasters and is predicted to produce millions of climate refugees in the future. Social service and health workers need to be well prepared for what this is likely to entail.

Choose ONE of the following groups to analyse:

low income Australians displaced by recent bushfires; OR

Pacific Islander communities facing rising sea levels; OR

a remote Indigenous community in Australia that has limited or no access to clean running water.

Using evidence-based research and practice, critically discuss how you would integrate these principles/practices in your social work practice with these diverse groups and communities as it applies to the chosen scenario. (1000 words)

SCEANRIO 2: The crisis of abuse and risks of addiction for survivors

While love and abuse shouldnt coexist, they often do and for most victims produce a legacy of trauma, including the increased risk of addiction.

heterosexual women domestically abused by male partners; OR

children sexually abused by a relative (uncle, aunt, parent, sibling, cousin etc); OR

transgender young people abused by parents for being trans.

SCENARIO 3: Using the Stages of Change Model and Motivational Interviewing with a chosen group who are traumatised and addicted

The Stages of Change Model and Motivational Interviewing are widely in Australian alcohol and other drugs treatment centres. In recent years they have also been adopted in a range of other settings, such as corrections, child protection/safety, and veteran affairs.

Choose a group to analyse, who you are to assume they are chronically dependent on drugs, alcohol, gambling or gaming to self-soothe, such as:

returned veterans with post-traumatic stress; OR

impoverished post-release Adult prisoners (any gender) traumatised by multiple foster care placements during childhood; OR

unemployed parents who have had at least one child removed by Child Protection due to addiction issues.

Note: it is possible for critical social workers to argue for or against the utility of the term addiction. It will depend on how you build your argument, paying attention to questions about power, social status, stigma and perhaps the morality of willpower or self control.
