SWB221 Assessment 1 Presentation : Details

Overview

Task description

You will deliver a presentation in small groups in your tutorial class advocating for a target population who are experiencing oppression due to a social problem. You will use the advocacy framework below, which will be discussed in tutorials, to structure your presentation. You will upload your summary report to canvas for assessment the week after you present.

Your tutor will give you feedback which you can include in your report.

Length

Presentation: 5-10 minutes - Report approximately 500 words.

What you need to do

You are encouraged to select a social problem that interests you and relate it to a group of people (population) that you are also interested in, drawn to, scared of etc. Feel free to use recent issues discussed in the media. The following are some examples you could choose:

Young people (population) homelessness (social issue)

People of diverse sex, sexualities and genders (population) and homelessness (social issue)/violence (social issue)

Older persons (population) and elder abuse (social issue)

Indigenous children (populations) and child protection (social issue)

Women with a disability (population) and sexual abuse/homelessness (social issue)

Men with a borderline intellectual disability (population) and their over-representation in prison (social issue)

Unemployed/underemployed (population) and drug and alcohol abuse (social issue)

Single mothers (population) and welfare austerity (social issue)

Ethnically diverse (population, eg, young African men) and policing/crime/social disorder (social issue)

Women and children (population) and domestic violence (social issue)

Assylum seekers/refugees in Australia

Resources available to complete the taskThe advocacy framework discussed in tutorials will help you structure your presentation. An outline is summarised below:

1. Understand the Issue:

Research and thoroughly understand the social issue and its impact on the oppressed group.

Gather data, statistics, and personal stories to build a strong foundation for your advocacy efforts.

2. Identify the Oppressed Group:

Clearly define the specific oppressed group affected by the issue. This includes recognizing their unique experiences and needs. This will mean including intersectionality in your analysis.

3. Develop Empathy and Cultural Humility:

Cultivate empathy and cultural humility by learning about the culture, history, and experiences of the oppressed group.

How would you engage with this group and learn from them to be an advocate?

4. Build a Coalition:

Give suggestions of who you would collaborate with: eg, like-minded individuals, organizations, and communities who share your advocacy goals.

5. Feedback and Accountability:

Present your ideas on how you would seek feedback from the oppressed group you're advocating for to ensure your efforts align with their needs and priorities. Hold yourself accountable to their goals and interests.

You may use the same social issue and target group in your final assessment or use a different issue.

Assignment 1 marking criteria:

Presentation: presentation of your advocacy framework using the headings above in an engaging and well structured way (20 marks).

Report:

Knowledge of social problem you have chosen (ie, what are the causes of this problem) and how it uniquely affects a chosen population (10 marks)

How would you work alongside the population experiencing the affects of this issue (ie, how would you engage and seek feedback with this population, what coalitions would you form) (10 marks)

Quality of research and formulation of the report (10 marks)

You will choose a presentation date in either week 6 or 7 and deliver a 5-10 min presentation in small groups in your tutorial session. You will then upload your report which summarises your presentation using the headings and questions above and includes a reference list onto canvas the week after you present. You may use the feedback on your presentation to feed into your report.

You don't need to do a powerpoint but you can if you'd like to present graphics or graphs to illustrate your social issue research. You will need to provide your own laptop to present this in your group.
