Detailed Instructions

Your essay should include an introduction; main body in which you will briefly describe the critical incident, deconstruct and reconstruct the critical incident (using Fooks guidelines and the other literature that make up the required reading for this unit), and highlight the implications of the learning to emerge from this process i.e how will the learning you have gained from the critical reflection inform your future practice in human service organisations?; conclusion and bibliography.

  • Your introduction should be brief statement indicating what you will cover in your essay/ purpose of essay.

  • You should include a very brief description of your critical incident near the beginning of your essay. This should not rehash the detailed retelling of your initial narrative that you presented in class. It should merely describe a very succinct account of your incident/context in broad terms so that the reader can locate your story/analysis in its context.

  • This essay requires you to be analytical, not just descriptive. So, you can remind the reader about relevant parts of your initial story during the analysis part of the essay i.e the deconstruction/ reconstruction of your critical incident. For example:

    • Your inclusion of additional descriptive detail about your incident into your analysis, might sound something like, Initially, because of the meaning I attached to the position of being a student in my organisation,(or whatever the experience was)I felt completely powerless (or whatever your initial feelings about the incident were). I assumed I had no power,(as an example)which hides an assumption that power is a commodity. This reflects modernist notions of power.(Insert reference to link your arguments to literature/unit reading materials). However, engaging with postmodern understandings of power as fluid and contextual (insert reference) frees me to think differently (Explain what the difference is for you in your situation).I can now see that(Explain the implications of your change in thinking for your practice)which gives me different practice options of (Explain the implications of your learning for critical practice in human service organisations.

  • The goal is todemonstrate transformationin your thinking and practice usingFooks (2016) model of critical reflection. There are many other models of critical reflection, but the one that you need to demonstrate knowledge of is the one we have used throughout this unit (which draws of critical and poststructural theories).

  • The trick with this essay is not to get too hung up on the structure. There are multiple ways to structure critically reflective writing, which can work well.

    • Some people write about the deconstruction of their incident (many different assumptions), and then follow this with reconstruction (of these assumptions collectively).

    • Others choose to write about the deconstruction and reconstruction of particular themes, and organise their writing by the themes instead (e.g power, identity, impact of dominant discourses, binary constructions, etc).

  • The main thing is to demonstrate to your reader is your understanding of, and engagement with, the critical reflection process, (See Fook 2016 chapter 7) and what you have learned from it.

    • This should reflect atransformation- demonstrating where you started, (initial description) and what has changed (through deconstruction) and where you are at now (reconstruction).

  • In describing your learning, you need toarticulate the implications for critical practice within human services organisations.

    • How has your thinking about practice with groups/teams and /or communities changed as a result of engaging in this critical reflection process?

  • Consistent with the poststructural underpinning of this unit, there is not one right way to this piece of work! It can take many forms. Please check QUT readings for some of mine and others examples of critically reflective writing. There are a number of examples of critically reflective writing in QUT readings for this unit.

  • You arewriting in the first personfor much of this essay, as you are building new theory to inform your practice by critically reflecting on a critical practice incident.

    • However, even though you are writing about a reflection on your practice, this is an academic essay that should beappropriately referencedto support your arguments and demonstrate your engagement with the relevant unit readings.

  • Your conclusion should summarise your main/points and learning.

  • A minimum of 10 referencesif you use them well. You should free to use many more than this.

Hope this is useful info and enjoy the process of writing up. For me (Christine) this is where the deeper reflections always reveal themselvesand the learning is at its richest and most valuable for future practice.

This essay will be assessed according to your ability to demonstrate:

  • advanced application of the skills of critical reflection to your practice in human service organisations

  • a comprehensive engagement with the materials from the entire unit and therefore

  • a sound understanding of the deconstruction and reconstruction processes of critical reflection and how these relate to practising

  • an ability to critical analyse and reflect on your practice including a sound understanding of the deconstruction and reconstruction processes of critical reflection

  • a sophisticated understanding of the inextricable relationship between theory and practice

  • a logically structured, well researched, coherently argued essay that is appropriately supported by relevant published literature
